Description
Artwork, story writing, and original character Silvia (C) ~foxstory 2012. I've featured Silvia in my Fox in Autumn drawing as well; she's a character from my novel.Silvia climbed upon the fallen log and strained her eyes to look through the trees for a precious bit of sunlight. Through a gap in the clouds, she could just make out the sky above. The snowstorm was beginning to pick up in earnest. Unlike her past memories of the season's first snowfall up north, this time was different. She was a fox now, hundreds of miles south in the Appalachians, and would experience the wonder anew.
Beside her, the stream's gentle flow continued under its cover of ice. All around her, clusters of snowflakes built up on fallen branches and old rocks. She could vividly feel the freeze, the vivid sense of "I am alive" and "I am a fox" as snow began to accumulate on her muzzle while she stood astride her fallen arboreal perch. Soon, the forest would be covered in a fresh winter carpet, an icy coat seemingly devoid of color yet also sending every color at once reflected into her golden eyes. The journey would continue, but it would be different now.
_______________
This is my entry for the FoxArtistsofDA "Foxes in Winter" contest. Silvia is a major character in my original novel that I am currently developing. I've begun a re-write of the whole project, a new second draft, to reflect changes in my writing style and a change towards more showing and less telling.
If you have a Full HD, 1920x1080 screen, download for the 1853x1080 version. Fullview size on dA is 1280 pixels wide because of other common resolutions. This was originally around 3000x1700 pixels, or a little larger. As for the 4K resolution... someday, someday I want to have that for a computer and tablet.
If you're interested in my novel, please check out my 2011 journals, which discuss the concept in more depth. I can send out writing samples to a few people, if you're interested and would be able to provide critique and constructive feedback. Thanks for looking!
I appreciate every favorite, but comments are really the best! Let me know what you think!

I love this picture, because I love winter and you drew the fox very well, especially the green eyes are fantastic. It looks like you've painted me: reddish brown hair, green eyes and a soft spot for the winter.Β And my name is also Silvia! ^^ I hope you remember me!

I do remember you, and thank you for the comments on this picture.Β I wanted to use something of a golden to dark yellow or slightly ochre color for the eyes.

Thank you!Β This one took awhile, but I like to produce very detailed works.Β I've used the same fur style in some of my more recent uploads, too.Β I think I may have improved over this piece, which was from 2012.

I love how soft the snow looks.

Thank you! I originally used a rough-looking brush for the snow, but I then used the scatter brush feature and the motion blur/ gaussian blur filters to make the snow look gentler.

Wonderful :3 the scenery is just so white and serene, fitting with the character contemplating who she is upon the white snow, great job!!

Thanks, redmight! I really wanted to capture the idea of it being freshly fallen snow and a new view of self. Just curious, did the blue-white area appear as cold water, or solid ice to you? I got different answers from people I showed it to.

Beautiful picture, I also love the written counterpart to it, as well. It was all very well done.

Thanks, Lili! I'm particularly glad you liked the writing, because I'm beginning my writing project over again. I hope I've improved since when I started the older versions of it.

Name reminds me of an OC I've used for a few years, 'Shilva'. Strange how small the Internet makes the world, eh?
Nice to see you're here again, and I appreciate the comments, especially on 'Love'. I was going to edit out the monopoly reference, but I never found the time, and by now, it's solidified as part of the poem in my mind, even if not a wanted part. I'd reply there, but my Fire is acting up again and I can't reply- miracle that I actually got to comment on this, even.

Indeed, it's a small online world. I've actually found two people on deviantART named Silvia.
I like being able to comment on others' poetry, when it's nicely written, as yours is. Have you started or done any recently regarding foxes? Also, it's nice your (Kindle) Fire worked for this!

Thank you! It's nice to see comments on a number of my uploads from the same person. And yes, I'd considered it a really nice name even before I designed this particular character. I also have a character reference sheet that I could send you the link to, if you wanted to read a bit more about the fox character.

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it. Did the blue-white area look more like cold water or solid ice to you, by the way? Some people have had different interpretations of it. And practice helps a lot, it's how Ivysaurs are made. c:

Haha
Looks more like water, only because if it were ice, there would be snow on it!

foxstory In reply to PKMNBulbasaur [2012-12-25 15:35:29 +0000 UTC]
Oh, okay. (And I asked, because someone else who saw it also said water.) I intended it to appear as ice, thinking that any fresh snow would be blown off the flat, slick, icy surface by wind. I also thought water would have to be a lot darker. But it's up to the viewer, really, seeing as I haven't been able to directly observe ice covering a stream or snowfall on that in about four years.
