Description
I hope you enjoy this small 6 panel comic I made. It's based on the Evangelion characters Shinji and Asuka.I speak a little German, but I always thought about how Shinji must feel whenever Asuka would go ona rant in German. She's just bitching him out and he has NO idea what she is even saying.
I do think this is how many fans feel.
This was hand drawn in pencil, but I scaned and inked on my computer. I was just trying something new. I normaly ink by hand.

It's funny how her name is not German at all.. :/
And I may be mistaken, but I didn't think she spoke much in german in the series (I watched to episode 22).. Unless there was an episode I missed that had her speak it alot..

Brilliant. Both really funny and captures much of Asuka in just 4 panels. I know (some) german myself and love when Asuka starts bitching in german. I'm also really impressed with how well the dub-actress does in speaking german.

Mhm... I have a feeling that Shinji would feel better if he DIDN'T knew what Asuka is throwing at him... It's better to Not know some things. On the other hand Shinji probably can't get anymore depressed so this won't affect him... hopefully.

Nicely done with the German dialog.
I happen to understand German, spoken and written. Funny to note is that the German in the Japanese version is mostly accurate for one or two mistakes here and there. But the American Dub i've seen, they had the voice actor redo the German parts as well because she sounded too different from the Japanese one. Lets just say that the mispronunciations were hilarious to hear

So, wait, run that by me again. Are you saying that the English dub had worse German then the Japanese dub? Frankly, after having heard both versions I have to conclude that the English version has better German, if only accent wise. The German dub however... well, that was just confusing.
And before you ask. No, I am not actually fluent in German, though I did pick a lot from my grandmother.

I am not German myself but I live in the Netherlands only a 20 minute drive from the border of German, needless to say, I've been there often enough to the point that German comes rather natural to me when spoken even though I still lack some words here and there, but I get by.
What I am saying however is that the pronunciation of certain words were in fact off. its hard to spot but the mispronunciations are there.
To one who is used to hearing native German's speak, the German phrases spoken just seem off. Like someone wrote the line in English and then just translated each individual word into German.
Going from Dutch to German you can get away with it at times due to some similarities however Going from English to German or even from Japanese to German you cannot get away without some noticing the sloppy job done.
Still the German phrases spoken were in my opinion irrelevant to the continuation of the series so it is only a slight oversight.

I suppose I can get that, but that still doesn't explain whether you're giving a general statement or if you prefer the English or Japanese dub for their German. As for the pronunciation though, there's a really easy explanation for that: Asuka speaks German with an accent, which isn't that surprising considering she was born in the US, thinks of herself as a German, and was raised by a multinational organization. Heck, considering how many different accents are in the US within a few hundred miles of each other it really wouldn't surprise me if Asuka's accent is how native Germans speak, just native Germans in a different part of the country then you're familiar with.

tommygunner70 In reply to CodyMacArthurFett [2010-07-18 20:11:49 +0000 UTC]
It is a general statement. as for preferance; I'd give it to the english dub, just so that I don't have to spend my time reading subtitles instead of actually watching the screen play.
Hmmm... You seem to forget that Asuka is a character in a show voiced by an actor. Really easy explanation: the voice actor is required to speak a language that she isn't very familiar with which caused the tiny little screw ups. doesn't matter what was written in the script, its still the Voice actor's job to get it as right as possible.
Think of that what you will as I am done about this.

I think he has actually been doing this in the show. Isn't there a scene on the school yard where Shinji greets Asuka with "Guten Morgen"? He must have looked it up for her.
