Description
This image is based on that rather emotional song that is played in the Naruto series called, "Sadness and Sorrow".None of the characters appear in this image, but the environments are based on certain turning points in the character's lives.
Naruto- The swing Naruto sat in while he watched all the families congratulate their kids on graduating.
Sakura- In the forest of death where she felt so helpless and cut her own hair.
Sasuke- This is the entrance to the Uchiha clan after the massacre.
While coloring and drawing this I pretty much listened to the song "Sadness and Sorrow" in a loop to keep me in the proper mood. I'm starting to feel like I need therapy now.
If you are interested this is sized to be a wallpaper for 1024x768
This was about 3 days work I believe. I mostly worked on this during bits of free time from commissions. The image is hand drawn and colored using Paintshop Pro Vr7.
I'm not sure what kind of reaction this image will get. Seeing as this picture is more about the environments and no character appears. I hope you enjoy this image and I look forward to any comments someone would like to add.

Thank you. That was part of the goal. Giving a feeling of the characters' emotions without ever seeing them.

This concept is pretty brilliant, excellent job.
I couldn't help but giggle at the differences from Sakura's experience to the other two. Naruto's went through loneliness and failure. Sasuke went through betrayal and tragedy. Sakura... had to sacrifice being pretty. Relativity does play a concept here as the moment when she cut her hair was when she realized she wasn't living up to her potential as a ninja and would have to sacrifice certain values to do that. Thinking about it, though, the moment here was actually a triumphant one for Sakura. I don't feel she really went through any "tragic" event that could equally be compared to Sasuke and Naruto.

Thank you. She gave up more that being pretty. She had to put aside her pride and sense of superiority. It's just unfortunate that Kishimoto never gave her anything more than superficial growth. As the series concluded, I really noticed some rather remarkable sexist tones to the female cast as a whole.

I wouldn't really call it sexist. Tamari was always one of the best characters in terms of... character. And as much as Sakura, Ino and Hinata had major crushes, Naruto and Lee were just as lovestruck. It's just that the story focused way too much on Naruto, Sasuke and their enemies at the end. Most everyone else became useless by then, or their point was to help Naruto and Sasuke. When you have a show where woman already aren't abundant, which isn't that far-fetched in a show about an occupation that is essentially the army (not that woman can't fight, just that historically speaking, war was a male dominated field), and almost all characters become useless save the main ones, who are both male, naturally the female percentage of uselessness will be higher than the males.

Kishimoto said he never really planned something for Sakura. I really think he should've made at least a back story though, being one of the main characters and all. Some side characters have had it much better than her.

I don't mind Sakura not having a tragic backstory, that could make a great foil if written correctly, but it adds to the long list of reasons of why her character just can't compare with her teammates. She was put right next to Naruto and Sasuke but just didn't measure up in any way possible.

Yeah that's true. I feel like there was almost no development on her part. She doesn't necessarily have to have a tragic backstory, but any backstory of some sort would've been okay. I feel like I know almost nothing about her.

this is great. if i could suggest something, maybe try changing the color of the line art to a color a few shades darker than the object for the background to make the foreground pop a bit.

uh okay... as i said it was a light suggestion (that also praised your work btw) and i gave reasoning as to how it could work for you.
no reason to get all snooty. also, when i pointed out changing line colors, that didnt mean this work specifically. just something i was pointing out you could try sometime.

It's just a good rule of thumb that you don't tell an artist what they should change about their art work unless they're asking for that sort of input. It's the equivalent of walking up to someone on the street and telling them how to dress.

which is why i used non commital "if i could" and "maybe" which indicated that it wasnt a big deal if
you werent cool with me saying so. i cant take a million years to dictate every little thing i say so
i dont ruffle any feathers. i suppose a clearer way i meant it was "hey, if you feel like it, maybe try this sometime"
but its whatever. again, i did not say you should change your art, nor did i say you should change this piece.
i know i wouldnt get flustered over someone saying something basically the same like:
"wow your work is great! maybe sometime you could try this ______"

Lol. Naruto lost his parrents and he was treated like dirt. Sasuke lost his parrents because of his brother and he`s out for revenge...Sakura lost her hair...th..that`s it.

The hair was symbolic of her tossing aside her vanity and changing who she was as a person. Sadly, Kishimoto never gave more anything more than superficial growth.
