Here is the second and final page to my Force Awakens fan comic. Page one can be found here: foxxfireart.deviantart.com/art…
I really liked how it tied back to what she said to Maz in the basement. How she wouldn’t touch the lightsaber again, but called it to her to save her friend. It was the moment she made the choice to get involved, her hero moment.
Rey goes through stages in each panel that you can see on Daisy Ridley’s face in the scene. She goes from fear, reluctance, anger, and determination.
This picture had a lot of changes and evolution from its original concept. The Patreon supporters can go back and see those. I was just nearly wrapping up when I went to find the color for Rey’s narration text background. While looking at the Disney Infinity picture, I discovered the character’s eyes were more green. It was an easy enough change, but I’m still glad I caught that.
I was experimenting with using Japanese sound effects in place of English.
The kanji in the last panel is for 目覚める (mezameru). It means, “to awaken to (instinct, ability, perception, etc.); to become aware of; to become conscious of; to realize”. While it felt appropriate for the title and scene. I’m sort of iffy about that addition.
This is the 35% sized version. The larger sizes will be distributed out to my Patreon supporters at the end of the month, after payments have been confirmed.
It pains me that I didn’t discover that Star Wars Fanzine until recently. I would have loved to have gotten in on that for charity. Here’s hoping they do a sequel, and you can be damn sure I’d be submitting this project.

This was my favorite scene in the movie. Kylo trying to call Anakin's saber, it lifts but flies past him right into Rey's hand. She ignites it and the camera pans to show Kylo in the shadows and Rey, with resolute expression, bathing in the blue hued light reflected by the snow as The Skywalker-theme starts playing in the background.

Why would you want a Part One of a three part story to explain everything? Go look back at the original Star Wars.. There's a lot left unexplained.
I loved that the trailers and promos hid Rey as the main protagonist. It made the surprise feel so much more interesting. Trailers spoil too much of a movie nowadays.

yes but not the important details to the speficic movies. If you watch episode one we learn Anikin is good pilot before he jumps into the pod race and we see him learning how the control of the naboo starship works by talking with the pilot. It's a blink and you'll miss it thing. Much like we learn tha Luke is a pilot from dioluge with uncle Owen and how he want to go the academy. Heck we even get the establishing force bit when he's on the Falcon training with Ben. Rey does not get ANY of this. We instead fallow an ex stormtrooper and get his development and motivation and sown his character... Rey just sort of happens. Not explanation just BOOM! I'm a pilot! BOOM! I know the problem with the ship I called a piece of junk earlier! BOOM! I'm force sensitive! BOOM! I can preform complex jedi mind tricks with out training! BOOM! I can weild a light saber expertly! ... I'd like SOME explanation yes please. I'm not askin for a play by play just show she can do something. Show her working on the falcon before she flies it. Show she can fly a ship of any kind, Show she has force nightmares, show she can even be force sensitive. Don't tell me she is cause it's the climax. Build up to it. Ya gotta earn that 'Use the Force Luke'

I figured she just developed a "Evolve or DIE" trait from growing up on a scrapyard planet. Every power she had was used on her or in front of her.
Also it's SPACE MAGIG. Space magic explains everything.

yeah but all it would have taken would was like two ore three establishing lines or scenes that would have take less than a minute to make it less of a hand wave thing (see Anakin talkin to the pilot on the way to naboo or Luke talking about how he wants to go the academy) This just comes out of no where and 'A wizard did it' is not a viable explanation for a film series like star wars... You know what I mean.
Hell there 'evolve or die' thing would have been great on jaku what if we say her have like a force vision bed shaking cold sweat nightmare of... oh I dunno a certain rather lame duck sith killing students and then talking to someone about 'having a dream' again or a working on a certain starship and mention to the fat guy that the inhibitor will choke the engine only to get told to get her ass back to work leaving going 'It'll still choke the engine'. That would make a lot more sense and seem less... Mary-sueish... I dunno after like what? nearly 50 years for a sequel they owe us that much.

Well we see her daily routine when we are introduced to her. So there are hints and nuggets of clues to her abilities hidden there. Also, Rey is NOT a mary sue. You wanna talk mary sue? Remember when they tried to add a female NINJA TURTLE?

I must have missed that. I mean all we now is she's a scavenger and she has a literal crotch rocket she rides around on and can speak droid... for some reason. I mean did we really need to see what the 'portion' looked like? We didn't see Luke eat a woomp rat seems like we could have use some of that wasted time to better establish her having force perception.
Well that's the problem with Rey she may not have intended to BE a mary sue, but that is how she ends up being with everything presented to us. Its like if Sarah Connor went from being freaked out of the terminator to being like she is in terminator 2 in the same movie in the span of twenty minutes.
Well in Venus' own defense the fact that it was done by Saban didn't help much either.
Actually the biggest thing with the film where I draw issue with is that they have the potential for a unique idea: We have THREE chracters t ofallow as opposed to one. Finn is our Saber user (hell he uses it as an actually weapon), Poe is our ace pilot and Rey is force sensitive. You need all three working together to be an effective team... That gets throw out the window pretty much when we see Rey EXPERTLY pilot the falcon with no explanation how she was able to do that, and the that fact that Poe.... VANISHES until the third act. So effectively we get time to develop Finn's character, our pilot vanishes and our female lead gets her development throw at us at the last minute..

And the portion was meant to show how much work she had to go though every day just to get a small meal.

Gack! But.. We knew... Luke.. Was.. A... PIOLET!!!! Seriously we knew that from when he showed up that's why he was so pissed he couldn't go the academy. Heck we know that before he gets in the X-wing. Rey just does it because. All I want is an establishing shot or some throw away diologue dammit! That would have fixed her character!
Well like I said Saban and what not (I mean look how many time the power rangers pulled victory right outta their ass)

There were a lot of missteps with episode 7 Poe was one of the big ones. I mean I get the feeling he and Finn we're suppose to be like Luke and Wedge by the time we got the end... And they've had like seven minute of screen time together? I mean yeah we see he's a badass.... Though its hard to care when he only just NOW shows up at the end... Also you mean to tell me a WHOLE PLANET full of tie fighters can't take out like 5 ships?

She takes ships apart and spends all day being a gear head. Her knowing how to fly isn't that much of a stretch.
Also a moon sized battle station couldn't take out five ships.

Right but being a mechanic doesn't mean you can drive a car. I have a buddy who knows a TON about military vehicles doesn't mean he knows how to drive one. Sides she's a scavenger that's all we know. We didn't find out she knew anything about starships other than 'this thingy is connected to this thingy and it gets me food.'
Eh well you can argue that an entire fleet went after the death star that was literally five ships on the star killer base and most of them lived.... Eh? That and the stupid of there being the same damn weakness you'd figured they'd have like a bagillion turrets outside the thing and a squad of tie interceptors ready for it.
