"The Banshee of Irish folklore appears as a beautiful young girl who is thought to be the spirit of a deceased relative who died young and comes back from the grave to warn of death. Her song is piercing and cuts to the heart. Its tone is melancholy and prophetic. Sometimes she appears as an old woman in a funeral shroud. She has long hair streaming in the wind and a pale complexion with eyes red from continual weeping.

"The term 'Banshee' (Bean--Woman" Shee--Fairy) means 'The Woman of the Fairy Race' and comes from old Gaelic. She is not human but spirit."

I remember when I was a child and moved to my new home in Colorado, I would sometimes hear strange, mournfoul noises outside. It was a sad, fierce wail, and it would beat at the windows when my parents weren't home. I later realized this was the wind--something we did not have so strongly at my old house. But before that realization dawned, and even afterwards, it was fun and a little spooky to imagine that the Banshee was wailing outside my window.
