Thank you very much for sharing this. That 99 limit bug was confounding me and I didn't know about manual editing. I can't upgrade because I'm still using XP and the newer versions of Reality are not XP-friendly so it's always great to find a way to make what I have work!

Cool... Could you maybe giveΒ us a clue as to settings for the effect?

Sure thing...
1 - Start Reality.
2 - Select the surface, right-click and select 'To Mirror' to apply mirror.
3 - In this example, I left the 'Mirror tint' to default 240:240:240.
4 - Adjust 'Thin film thickness' and 'Thin film IOR'.
5 - In this example, the 'Thin film IOR' = 1.33 and 'Thin film thickness' = 240
NOTE that there is a bug in Reality that limits values up to 99 for the thickness.Β If the value you want to use in the thickness is greater than 99 then you'll have to manually change it in the .lxs file.
This bug will be fixed in the upcoming Reality 4.3.
Example of what to change in .lxs (any text editor will do):
------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Mat: SPEXuvMAT_5154-13938:Lenses
MakeNamedMaterial "SPEXuvMAT_5154-13938:Lenses" "string type" ["mirror"] "texture Kr" ["SPEXuvMAT_5154-13938:Lenses:Lenses_diffuse"] "float film" [240] "float filmindex" [1.33]
See the "float film"... that's the value for the thickness [240] - change this to your desired value to a max of 2500.Β The "float filmindex" is the IOR [1.33].
To render, you can only use "CPU-no acceleration" at the moment - LuxCore (accelerated modes) does not support thin film.Β And most important, have something in the surroundings to reflect in the mirror... emptiness is not the best.
Hope this helps

Thanks. I don't get that green tint or film as you did.Β Did you have a different light setup?Β Color in the light, perhaps?

No coloured lights at all but remember there's a bug in Reality right now:
from my note above:
"NOTE that there is a bug in Reality that limits values up to 99 for the thickness.Β If the value you want to use in the thickness is greater than 99 then you'll have to manually change it in the .lxs file.
This bug will be fixed in the upcoming Reality 4.3."
-------------------------
If you don't see any colouring this might be the reason:
You're using "CPU-Accelerated" or "OpenCL Rendering" mode -->Β Use "CPU-No acceleration" mode since the other two modes don't support thin film.
AND/OR
You have to enter the value by hand, for the moment, if it's higher than 99
AND/OR
You're using a thickness value that is too high for the thickness of the object.Β When the film thickness exceeds 700 nm, greater thickness are required to see any noticeable change in the colouring.

Sorry about the delay. Just wanted to give you the update. I've managed to snatch away some computer time from RL and am at the moment rendering out a scene. Glasses and Puddle, the puddle being oil or gasoline, black or somewhat black. I also referred back to the link you posted about the mirror and thin film.Β Read it and am now trying to apply what I read.
Thanks again for the tip. Mind if I share it?

Oops... I missed your reply... the next release of Reality will have a fix for this so you don't have to share this since it will be irrelevant.
Cheers
