I haven't drawn much of student interactions because there wasn't any quick- and easy-to-understand soundbites. From the guy who gaslit* me by turning his MP3 player* on and off, to the girl who would lend me her notes if I showed her why I was writing everyone's names down, their levels of welcomingness really were mixed.
The design of the math teacher is based on The Producer from the Magic School Bus TV show . (I think the real one was more Central-Asian- than East-Asian-descent, but again, I'm intentionally not trying to be faithful to reality with their faces).
While, on the one hand, this was probably the first person that I saw turn their back on students to do something that was visibly their job —Ms. Larissa and Mr. Milton left in the middle to make several personal phone calls (they left the door open, we could see and partially hear them)— I know for a fact she taught in at least one other school where spitballs were against the rules, so it's not like she didn't know it was wrong. Still, her "just grow a spine"-style retort was too much when on top of everything else.
