Description
Wanted to try out a depth of field effect, but with my system causing the program to render so slow it would probably still be going a week from now had I let it continue. I'll try that when I've got a better system.Edit: Changed the image to include the Depth of Field effect I applied in Photoshop.

If you have Photoshop CS4+ and Poser 8+ = you can do the depth of field in photoshop - I do it all the time.

Actually working with CS3 and Pro 2012, but I found a way to pull it off. I was gonna get a newer version of Photoshop, but I scrapped that idea in favor of a newer Poser.

I'm not sure if CS3 can do the "lens blur" or not - you'd have to check. (it might)

I found a way to do it. Looked up a tutorial and it was all stuff I was already familiar with, I just never thought of this for some reason.

yep, that's the process - but if you can output a zdepth channel from Poser - you get a really cool mask to use for the lens blur.

it's EASY in poser pro 2012 - go into the render settings of your current image. On the right side = under Gamma correction there's a dialog for Auxilary render data - hit the little triangle next to it - then check "Z depth" channel.
next time you render that scene, when you save your image, you'll also get a zdepth image. (unless you output a psd - then it's built into the file) I work with pngs so I always get an extra zdpeth png. There are tricks and tips after that stage, but try it.

Giving it a shot now. I am noticing it's taking a little longer to render, but not as long as using depth of field was causing.

I never noticed a difference in render time to be honest. yep, just did a test - same exact time to render a simple scene. Here's a tip - need a depth map from an already rendered image? EASY - Turn off all of the lights and shadows then render it. (Lighting doesnt affect depth mapping)

And I only just now read the bit about turning lights and shadows off. lol. Image is over halfway done now, so I may as well just wait.

Could just be that I'm sitting here waiting on it, whereas I usually go watch TV while I have a final render going. Maybe I'll get up for a bit lol

if you want to do a good dof without doing it in rendering try using Alien skin for cs5 photoshop it gives good results without having to wait for render time its just a pain to select out the figure.

Actually, when I know I'm going to need to have a specific feature on a separate layer, I simply delete all else from the scene except that which I intend to extract and merge to two .png files into a multi-layer work file. Saves considerable time in selecting an element of an image.

but of course lol i do the same but for some reason when i save to a png i get a slight white line around the figure (if you look at my daken its so clear) i thought this was always the case but it seems its my process
. Sorry.

Click on Layer, go down to Matting all the way at the bottom, then click Defringe. Try it in intervals of 1 at a time. Gets rid of the line.
