I'm guessing survival instincts. He knew he was in a bad spot, and after an alien attacked him and Lex, and she killed it, he went, "Hey, she might be useful." He saw the potential in her, and that she wanted to get out of that place just as much as he did.
Or perhaps he was just a silly teenager that didn't know any better. Or at least he had a heart. I dunno, Scar was definitely the nicest, most 'heroic' of all the Predators in the Pred series.
In the new movie AVP:R, the pred was just a ruthless killer with basically no character whatsoever. *rolls eyes* Killing is always fun, but give the guy some character!
