I'd conceived of them as an odd mix of the Asteromorphs in All Tomorrows, and the Imperial Spacing Guild in Dune, they being somewhat like the brains of spaceships.

"When mankind left the Milky Way in the 22nd century, it split in two directions.

"Most humans spent the long journey in cryostasis, oblivious to the aeons of time passing around them.

There were, however, humans who, by necessity or curiosity, stayed awake, tending to the cryostasis-ships as they drifted through intergalactic space.

"These humans, over one billion years of communication, evolution, cybernesis, genetic engineering, and exposure to zero-g, would eventually develop into the 'Spacers', an utterly alien, speciated offshoot of humankind, who have grown entirely acclimated to the stars.

"Possessing supercomputer-level intellects and an utter mastery of Probabilitomantic space travel, the Spacers have secured a monopoly over the FTL infrastructure present in Human Space. This is beginning to wane, however, with the introduction of less costly, computer-based warp drives by techno-envoys from the Chorman species."
