Description
The predrawing for this was done a while ago - it actually began with a school project about (actually german) literature. But I (and few others) picked foreign authors as well. Yep, guess what...mine was J.R.R. Tolkien. In this project I tried to lllustrate the plot of Tolkiens "main works": The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. The project ended with the pencil work, but for me it wasn't finished...there was (and still is) some work to do! (Yeay, colours...)
Now that I finally finished the work for "The Hobbit", it seems for me it is a bit "chaotic"...but nevermind, LotR and Silmarillion will get even more chaotic XD (Though I can't tell when it is going to be finished...)
Done with watercolour and no idea how long it took. I used different (rougher) watercolour paper than usual, it was a bit strange to work with.
That's all.
Oh no, wait...EDIT: I also used silver and gold gouache as well as white ink for small highlights! Just forgot that....
And now that I'm editing this, I'll ink some music I listened to while painting...

This.. This is truly stunning.. This view, this angle! The perspective with the character in front of the whole background, the mountain and dragon in the back, those colors, the lighting and shading, just amazing, you did so well on this painting dear! I love it

"The road goes ever on and on ..."

Vielen lieben Dank!

this is an incredibly gorgeous piece that I shared with some other Tolkien friends and am still incredibly impressed with. Absolutely wonderful concept and colours, I especially love some of the eye draws and subtle little additions in here. If you are making more for other books I am really excited to see and am as always looking forward to more of your artwork! You've been putting out some really incredible stuff recently!

Thank you so much for your encouraging words, it is really nice to read that! Yes, I have sketches for LotR and Silmarillion as well, though their composition is different to the illustration of the Hobbit (I like the Hobbit-idea the most
) and it could take some time until they'll be finished...

Awesome picture. I made a picture with a very similar concept some time ago:
I love to see how your way to depict it is quite different from mine. Well done!

Oh my, this wasn't on purpose! I'm sorry if you felt weird by looking at a to your work's similar motive...
Though I have to say I'm glad I didn't choose green as a main colour (I considered it in the beginning Now LotR is going to be green - or also blue.)
I also really like your take on the story, it looks more natural and tolkien-like than mine.

Not at all, I like to see it. The basic concept feels really natural for books like the Hobbit and the LotR, while your execution is obviously rather different from mine, so it is interesting to see other artist's take on it.

Beautiful stuff Floris!
I absolutely love how you do your wonderful winding rivers and paths in your artworks, it's so clear you love illustrating them as well and you've put that skill to great use here: sewing the story of the hobbit together along that winding path as it climbs the mountains right up old Smaug's tail!
I don't think it looks chaotic at all, in fact it's a very elegant way to create a scene encompassing so many elements as an entire story, this picture obviously took a lot of planning and careful work and it's understandable that you feel concerned with how all the elements blend together and play off of each other but rest assured it's in no way overwhelming or unclear, very easy on the eyes!

Yeah, I really do love illustrating it!
Looking at it now, I also have a bit other view on it. It seemed more chaotic when I finished it, maybe the work and I 'became friends' XD
Tank you very much for your kindness, Willis!
