Description Chapter 13 of Oscar Wilde's masterpiece of narcissism, malevolence and avarice, "The Picture of Dorian Gray", stages artist Basil Hallward's grotesque murder by no other than his own muse. Basil is bewildered to hear harsh accusations against the character of a seemingly ideal man and inquires after Dorian about his behaviour. In response to his question, Dorian leads the artist (who misses his evening train) into a room on the top landing, ostensibly uninhabited for years, and exposes his true soul--that of the devil: "So you think that it is only God who sees the soul, Basil? Draw that curtain back, and you will see mine". The once beautiful portrait on the wall transfigures into a macabre spectre leering at the two men...yet it is signed by the artist's own hand. In a dash of madness, Dorian savagely slaughters the man and takes his leave at ten minutes past two in the morning. No one could know. The descriptions are vivid, brimming with dark intensity.

For an Interpretive assignment dealing with the mechanics of theatre, I illustrated this scene in various storyboards from which I selected one to render. This image is the black and white version. The colour output awaits..

I wonder why you made the blood like the cross? I just finished reading the book, and I was shocked ahhaha, This really depicts the madness in that scene. I like how Dorian looks victorious. POOR BASIL

This blood-curdling, heinous climax was illustrated in preparation for a diorama I built! Complete with sewn figures and furniture. The Christian cross allusion in the blood streak was completely unintentional. However, given that Dorian Gray is the Devil's protege, perhaps the image of an inverted cross is fitting. I will be posting the colour version of this painting soon!

Perhaps its a subconscious decision to include the cross, I agree that Dorian is Devil's protege. Thx for ur insight

I recalled seeing this piece and thought that you hit such a majestic peak with this piece, even if it was only a rough. And it's a little somber and dark which I like
