Description When I was little and growing up in the early 1990s, 'Alvin & The Chipmunks' was one of my weekday afternoon and saturday morning favourites. I've seen the 2007 live action film that resurrected the franchise for the second time; it wasn't a great movie but speaking as an adult who likes kids shows, I think that had I been born 15 years later than I was then I would probably have loved it along with the rest of this generation of youngsters.

Still, I don't like their redesigns very much - the new chipmunks look and act rather ugly sometimes. So I decided to draw my first Chipmunks fanart with a bit of aggro coming from their MTV generation counterparts, whom I think are the superior Chipmunks!

I also drew this to honour Ross Bagdasarian Jr, who turned 60 just a day or so ago. Since his father, the creator of The Chipmunks, Ross Bagdasarian Sr (aka David Seville) passed away, Ross Jr has since been in charge of the characters along with his wife Janice Karman.

Oh, and for the record Simon and Alvin were always my fave chipmunks, though I recently have come to like the Chipettes as well ^^

The new chipmunks appear to be all hyper with no substance. The older chipmunks were more likable characters, in my opinion. Thanks

I spent hours rewatching the 80s cartoon on youtube the other day, and the first thing I thought was, "those chipmunks had hearts." These new ones, not only do they look like they could give you rabies, but they are too pop-culture oriented.

OMG I love this! I use to love watching the Chipmunks on a Saturday morning when I was 5! I hate the new ones. They didn't do them right! Alvin was just strange, Theodores voice was too high and the Chipettes..UGH GOD WHAT HAVE THEY DONE??! I hope they bring them back to CN Or Nick or even Disney! x

Okay this fanart looks cool.

And I think it fits the image just perfectly.

Although, Alvin,- Alvin? ALVIN!!!!! You're going to need something better than a guitar.

You know, I rather go with the 80s chipmunks rather than the current ones.

Haha, this is great
The original Chipmunks and Chipettes will ALWAYS be way better than the newfangled animation-y ones! (haha, i love saying newfangled)
And i'm from that 'generation of youngsters' you're talkin' about, lol.

PS- janice Karman designed both the 80's munks AND the new munks
Ross and janice actually did want a chipmunks CGI film 15 YEARS AGO. they would have done this anyways. They wanted them to look like real munks.

lol I think I have commented on this before but I have watched the old munks and I've got to say they are my least favorite version. I like the new munks simply because I think they are cuter (dont like batheroom humor though) but hey, that was probably funny to you when you were 8 years old. And I like the 60's munks because Alvin seems nicer, cuter, smaller, you know, more "innocent" then the 80's alvin. In the 80's he seems like he would just run over simon and theodore with his bike and think nothing of it. I also like the original 11958 munks cuz it seems that they dont get enough credit

FreyFox In reply to LordBoop [2010-05-30 13:48:12 +0000 UTC]

The 80s 'munks are still my faves because the stories they were in favoured drama over comedy. The new 'munks bother me because of their shallow one-dimensional personalities (and all the toilet humour as well, like you said).

Though Karman did design the 80s and 00s Chipmunks, I think it is a very divided conclusion as to which one is better.

I actually did like the new movies (aside from a few things, like bathroom humor) and loved the Squeakel, but I agree that the Chipmunks from the '80s are way better. The new movies have a completely different feel and I keep finding myself saying/thinking, "Wait...Simon/Alvin/Theodore would never do that in the cartoons..." I think of the CGI'd Chipmunks as completely different characters than the cartoon versions because of this.

Of course, having grown up with the '80s ones like a decade ago when they used to air on CartoonNetwork (even though I almost completely forgot about them later until the new movies came out), I am very biased.

Anyway, I like this art here. LOL, they don't look too happy to see that more realistic versions of themselves are stealing the spotlight. I have some reservations about favoriting it, though, because I have friends who adore the new movies and I don't want 'em to get the wrong idea if they see that I favorited this.

I dont think the origial "realistic Chipmunks" from 1958 liked the 90's chipmusnk stealing their spotlight....

audhdlassiedog In reply to LordBoop [2010-05-30 04:54:46 +0000 UTC]

Haha, true.
I just can't help but feel a bit sad that something I've known from my early childhood has to change so much in some ways I just don't care for. I dunno, I just prefer the '80s designs...IMO, human-sized, anthro-ish munks are just so durn adorable.

Initially, I felt the same way you do (in another comment) about the '60s Alvin versus the '80s Alvin. But after watching enough episodes, I did begin to see that he truly cares for his brothers...he just gets carried away sometimes with being so dang selfish. Such as the Wolfman movie where he temporarily got a bully off of Theodore's back. There was even an episode where he said that he didn't like being known as a troublemaker, and wanted to be able to be trusted. And he has shown several times that he can be sweet when he wants to be.
Though, yes, there have been episodes where he crossed the line from making me laugh to making me grit my teeth in anger. "Sincerely, Theodore" being one of them. I hate that episode. To death.
That said, Alvin's been my favorite character ever since rediscovering AATC. I'm not sure who my favorite character was back when it used to come on TV, I remember so little about watching the show back then. I wasn't crazy about it like I am now, but I remember that I liked it enough that I missed it after I couldn't watch it anymore. And that when I first heard about the first CGI movie coming to theaters, I thought "So that's what happened to them. Cool.".

I also like most of the story ploys from the '80s series better than the kind they have in the newer movies. (Of course, there's only been two so far, so kinda early to make a judgment there I guess.) I think being smaller prevents them from being able to have many of those type of adventures these days.
I guess another reason I might like the older series better is because I just don't like this decade much. I miss the '90s. Of course, I was just a six year old when this decade started, so my memory of those days probably seems more positive than they really were.

As for the 1958 'munks, I've only seen like a 5 second (hilarious) clip of them from the documentary episode "Rockin' With the Chipmunks", so I haven't seen enough of them to know how I'd like 'em. I've tried to find more clips of them, but no luck. I have seen several pictures of their designs, though.

Phew, sorry for the ramble. At least they aren't forgetting about the '80s show. Can't wait for them to release more of those DVDs...I'd like to see them release DVDs of more of the '60s episodes, too, rather than just that one.

LordBoop In reply to audhdlassiedog [2010-05-30 14:43:52 +0000 UTC]

lol well i dont think anything is actually wrong with the decade if you mean humor wise or cartoon wise. The stuff you see on tv now probably would have been funny to you when you were little. same with the potty jokes. Now i know that the potty jokes are pretty gross now. I havent seen any potty jokes in the squeakquel but Ross said he only used potty jokes in the first one because he wanted to bring the little kids in. he said something like "if farts and (somehting else i cannot remember) brings the kids in these days, so be it"
yes i do have some favorite episodes in the 90's and 80's like Cookie Chomer III because it does deal with real issues but thats not to say there are no loving emotions in the new movie. There are several group hugs and Alvin feeling really bad.
But i think i love the way the 60's munks talk (like in syllables) but they were tone deaf singers. I like the 80's-00's new singing better X)

There really werent any cartoons or anything for the original munks but i feel they need a little more credit since most people seem to think the 60's munks were the original.

Yeah, I used to watch a lot of shows back when I was little that I dislike now, for varying reasons.

I read somewhere that Mr. Bagdasarian Sr. changed them to cartoons to "fit the times". It is pretty easy to assume the '60s were the original...I thought the same until I read up on the history of AATC.

lol well for some reason i just "knew" that the chipmunks originally were realistic munks. I dont know how but maybe it is because when i was 7 i was obsessed with the munks but the only things i knew of th munks were Wolfman and Frankenstein. i thought those were the only cartoons of the munks. XD but maybe i had looked at the pics on google or something....this has happened before. like I dont know how I knew who the Animaniacs or Invader Zim were but i just knew who they were somehow 0_o

I don't think they'd mind you faving it, it is essentially part of the same series after all. I do think the 80s and 60s 'munks are better, and ironically I think most kids would too if they were given the opportunity to watch "The Chipmunk Adventure".

Probably. 90% of the people I've talked to who have seen the cartoon series say they liked it better than the new stuff.
One of my best friends (who is younger than me by about six years) has seen both the newer movies and some of the cartoons (via my DVDs) and she likes them equally. I've ordered "The Chipmunk Adventure" from Netflix, too, so she can see that as well.

Another thing I don't really like about the new movies is how they changed the story around so much. Having their mother leaving them on Dave's doorstep due to a food shortage seems to fly better than having them sneak their way into Dave's home via a basket of muffins. To me, anyway.

I guess it depends on what you mean by the "old" Chipmunks. When I was a kid, the Chipmunks looked like THIS .

And they sounded like THIS .

(In addition to Alvin, Simon and Theodore, I also liked the Clyde Crashcup cartoons, which were a part of their original show.)

I found some of these old Alvin shows a few months back, and thoroughly enjoyed them ^^. I can't relate to them the way I can with the 80s show (which I still think is my fave Alvin evolution).

The 60s and 80s 'munks certainly have more charm and appeal than the ones of the 2000s, that is for sure. But then maybe in twenty years they'll evolve again! Who knows.

Whitesofttail In reply to FreyFox [2010-02-04 02:39:33 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, the movies could start a revival of the television show. And I'm sure plenty of people who grew up with the more humanlike munks would want them back, even if they're likely to undergo some minor changes like in the past.

FreyFox In reply to Whitesofttail [2010-02-04 13:26:40 +0000 UTC]

Its all about money these days. I don't want the old 'munks appearances back if they retain the new ones' toilet-humour laden personalities. The new Chipmunks just won't do, and won't stand the test of time the same way the old ones did.

Sums up my thoughts nicely in one drawing, although admittedly I think this is more how I feel towards the upcoming second movie than the first one. I didn't like the character designs and certainly the personality changes, but I think the first movie is still at least watchable, which is more than I think I can say for the second one. I'm only going to watch the second one online.

Nice job on it, like the unique style on it where you gave the 80s version fur.
