Description
When I was little and growing up in the early 1990s, 'Alvin & The Chipmunks' was one of my weekday afternoon and saturday morning favourites. I've seen the 2007 live action film that resurrected the franchise for the second time; it wasn't a great movie but speaking as an adult who likes kids shows, I think that had I been born 15 years later than I was then I would probably have loved it along with the rest of this generation of youngsters.Still, I don't like their redesigns very much - the new chipmunks look and act rather ugly sometimes. So I decided to draw my first Chipmunks fanart with a bit of aggro coming from their MTV generation counterparts, whom I think are the superior Chipmunks!
I also drew this to honour Ross Bagdasarian Jr, who turned 60 just a day or so ago. Since his father, the creator of The Chipmunks, Ross Bagdasarian Sr (aka David Seville) passed away, Ross Jr has since been in charge of the characters along with his wife Janice Karman.
Oh, and for the record Simon and Alvin were always my fave chipmunks, though I recently have come to like the Chipettes as well ^^

sorry you dont like the new chipmunks ): I wasnt born in the 80's but i remember the wolfman and frankenstein movies. I love the CGI chipmunks but I think i'd love them even if they were had even worse designs because I just love the chipmunks in general. But you have to admit that the 50's chipmunks looked a little worse than the new ones...bacause in the 50's they did look like real chipmunks but its just a little wierd XD some pictures in the new movie are really cute though...you just have to get use to the way they look like i did with the 50's chipmunks.XD there are some pictures in the new movie where the chipmunks have kind of big shining eyes that make them look cute. In general i actually prefer the 60's chipmunks! Simon isnt too smart in the 60's and Alvin was just so young and happy. If you compare the 60's chipmunks to the 90's chipmunks...Alvin seems like a jerk XD but my favorite movie is Alvin and the Chipmunks Meet the Wolfman because that was the very first chipmunks movie ive seen and the wolfman and frankenstein were the only things i knew the chipmunks did for the longest time! But yeah i grew up with it and still have the movies but they are almost broken ):

That's the thing with Alvin - although as I kid I liked him most when it comes down to it he IS a bit of a jerk in the 1980s cartoon; which is kind of why I like Simon a bit more in that series these days. I didn't see the Frankenstein and Wolfman films, but I did see The Chipmunk Adventure ^^

yeah I have the chipmunk adventure on VHS. It is in good condition though because I got it two years ago at a flea market XD I like Simon best too But i think im one of the only people who likes it when they remake movies because I love old cartoons and I feel out of place at school when Im the only person who knows the shows. But if they make a movie then people do know about it and I can tell them about the older show XD

Very cool picture and I must admit I really hate the new CGI/live action Chipmunks film it is just not the same as the classic 80s cartoon I grew up with. I also despise their new designs and I agree with you they do look ugly in the new film compared to the 80s cartoon version and why are the Chipmunks so obnoxiously irritating in the new film?
Also can you believe they have made a second one? Of course one horrible live action movie of the Chipmunks wasn't enough to tick us off. Why the hell do these idiots have to ruin our childhood icons?
But anyways nice picture I hope the old school Chipmunks give the new school ones what for.

I know that your comment is very old, but I can't help it, but to reply to your comment. I think that the reason why they made them more realistic because it's taken in the real world. The od desgins are cute, but what looks good in a cartoon, may not look good in live action. Also I think that the live action ones are adorable, but I prefer a balance between humanism and chipmunkism. This a very good example--> ( not mines)

You have to remember that some these "idiots" are the same people who gave us this piece of our childhood - but I do agree that I think Ross Jr and Janice Karman are at the wrong end of the stick this time. I know hip hop is more of a trend these days than rock 'n' roll, but even Simon acts like an idiot. It's taken the charm right out of him.
The Chipmunks used to have some more clever humour in it, but the last film seemed to go to the lowest common denominator by having Alvin fart in Dave's face - that would never have previously happened.
The reason there is a sequel being made is because the first live action film did well in the box office. Kids will love the squeakuel, but I think 'The Chipmunk Adventure' is still the superior movie after all these years.

I know what you mean sorry I don't mean to mock the people who make these films that were involved in the originals its just the way I feel about modern day remakes and I just think its down to greed sometimes. They release a classic cartoon in live action or CGI form because they can't think of new ideas and so they can get it onto the market sooner and put no effort into writing the film and release it just for the money.
Also I must admit the humor was pretty good in the 80s Chipmunks but in the movie it is just dire. Just like most of todays remakes of classic shows they modernized it by adding bum jokes that films like Shrek have. But sadly thats the sort of stuff kids of today like but to old farts like me it ruins the nostalgic charm of the original.

Yeah, I agree. The actor David Cross mentioned he didn't regret starring in the 2007 Chipmunks film because it helped him pay for a holiday ^^ That's the way things work these days.

Well yeah, a studio needs money to make a film and films only get sequels if the original is deemed successful enough. Ross Bagdasarian Jr does have enough respect for his dad's characters though, so I wouldn't hold much against him.

I know its just the way I feel about modern day remakes. I also feel that way about Garfield and Scooby Doo since they have been turned to live action movies but then again I think ever since Warner Brothers bought Hanna Barbera they ruined them and I have heard Jim Davis can be greedy sometimes. I just think a cartoon should be a cartoon because the fun look of a cartoon makes it appeal more to a younger audience.

It probably is about making money. Jim Davis was always a corporate sort of guy, but then he is making a lot of money out of it. I admire cartoonists like Bill Watterson because he clearly had a lot of respect for his characters.

I have heard that Watterson respected his characters a lot (if only Jim Davis was like that) and I feel like that with my own characters. If they were big famous characters I wouldn't be too bothered with the money side I would just want people to see the work I have done thats why I post stuff up here on DA so people can admire my drawings. Also if there was going to be a movie of them I would want them to be a 2D cartoon movie and not a live action or CGI movie like most cartoon based movies these days I just don't think any other format would suit them.

I'd want my characters to be modest and not like some of the silly things that come out in the cinema today.

I guess bigger is better in this case! Also, I tend to think they make cartoon characters look overly realistic with CGI...

FreyFox In reply to BruBadger [2009-10-28 11:28:40 +0000 UTC]
It sort of spoils it a bit. Ross Jr and Janice Karman said they chose to make the Chipmunks look more realistic because having them as they were in the 1980s would be too much for an audience watching a live action film to take in. If you ask me, it didn't even have to be live action in the first place, but such is the trend with these things.

i'm sorry you dont like the cgi chipmunks, though i see your point, it wasnt as good as i thought it was gonna be, theyre at their cutest when they sing, but i am quite looking forward to 'the squakquel' with the chippettes in it hehe. hopefully the sequel will be better than the first one, coz in my opinion in most cases sequels normally are better than the first ones hehe

The CGI chipmunks aren't that bad but there is certainly room for improvement. The sequel may well be better, but then I still think The Chipmunk Adventure from the 1980s is the superior movie.

LOL! You should have added 'Die you CGI abominations' to that list. Yes I asgree I prefer the Ruby Spears/DiC chipmunks personally. But like you that's probably because 'they' were the ones I grew up with.

Yeah. That's often the case. In 1990 there was an episode where the Ruby Spears chipmunks met the ones from the original Alvin Show from 1961! That was fun ^^

Ah thanks. So it was a DiC episode then. It should look very interesting. I recall a similar episode where the Chipmunks looked back on their history in a kind of 'rock documentry' type of episode, they even included some of the Ruby Spears footage too in that episode.

As part of the canon, my guess is they must have been related (after seeing that episode, albeit the Beeb heavily edited it, probably due to the limited time slot it was given). Though the Chipmunks didn't really have an ongoing storyline as such. The production rights just went from one company to another at the turn of the decade (80's-90's) more or less.
