Description
The trailing end of the first train I ever shot in Ohio. A good day, and a nice way to re-start the obsession.Edit, 16 Feb 2012 03:13 - NS 9339 is currently at Manassas, VA on the P97. What are the odds?

I thought DICO/CODI were the unit coal movements? If not, then any idea what the train symbol for them actually is?

Coal movements are in the 600's and the daily trains are 380 southbound and 381 Northbound CSX has been running coal trains over the WV sec due to a bridge being out of service on there tracks in Wv those are in the 700's do you have facebook?

And I would go by that system if the Piedmont Division followed it too. 300s are supposed to be manifest, yet 302-338 are all regional commuter rail movements. P56 (unit stone) should be military, P63 (also stone) should be a steam powered excursion. At least the 88M follows the convention...
In my experience in Athens, calling them "daily" trains was getting awfully hopeful. I generally heard 4-5 trains per week, and I lived 1/2 mile from the tracks. Hope that bridge is still out when I get back to Athens in early June. I want to get some railfanning in up there! And I do indeed have Facebook: [link]

I use to live in The Plains and would often chase the daily trains. I have 2 friends that are NS engineers on said line.

Don't suppose you were ever able to put together a rough schedule of when things are supposed to come though? I tended to get trains (coal mostly) through around noon on the weekends, between 5 and 8 on weekday evenings, and anywhere between 2 and 6 in the morning for those manifests. Didn't railfan there long enough to get a schedule myself, nor do my notes exist anymore...

There is no real schedule for said trains on the line the best way I have been able to catch them is to spend all day listening to the radio feed which is online and guess how long it would take to get to where I wanted to catch the train. I mostly cought the southbounds out of Columbus. It would take between 2 1/2 3 hours for them to get to Athens from Columbus.

Ah see that's cheating. Just kidding, I do that all the time here in VA. In Athens, well I'd listen for the rumbling outside my window and then haul ASS on my bike to get to the crossing in time to see it (quarter mile in about a minute), or if I couldn't/didn't care to get there in time, I'd listen to at least get the direction it was going for my notes. Wouldn't mind living in the Plains (specifically on the eastern end of town) so I could get a warning in either direction when a train was at Athens or Chauncey grade crossings. Probably give me at least two minutes warning in either direction.
Wouldn't have minded the 2-3 hours notice, but I hadn't discovered railroad radio yet when I was up there, hence my taking LOTS of notes. I think those north-bounds should be audible out of Nitro, being only 5 miles north of the start/end point for the 380/381 at Institute Yard. That's assuming my timetable here is correct.

Ah. Well if confronting the guy doesn't work or isn't exactly possible or a good idea... See if this helps: [link]
Either way, I'd start documenting occurrences now in case you DO need to pursue legal action. Dates, times, and descriptions of activity could go a long way. And as the law is partially based on the fear or threat posed by a stalker, noting personal feelings for the both of you may also be a good idea.
Hope that helps.

Heh, thanks for the correction. Not sure where I found it called part of Piedmont... I shall certainly check those out. Always eager to find more people who railfan in SE Ohio.

I live in Columbus, and I think I've seen this very train, although the motive power was four Dash 9's instead of those three and the SD70M-2. Three Dash 9's at the front and one as the DPU on the back, makes me want to go railfanning again! XD

I think sometimes they swap out power on this one. I know that SD70M-2 has also run on the 380/381 by itself on occasion. There's also a few Geeps and SDs that run through there, though what kind and numbers I couldn't tell you as it was at night and I had just been blinded by their high beams. Interesting that they'd only have one unit on the rear though. I'd think they'd want that last one to avoid pulling a knuckle...

I think there were actually supposed to be two units on the rear that day, the train was going at a reduced speed (even slower than most coal drags) so I'm thinking there was a 2nd unit that might have failed along the way.

I think it might be DICO - Dickinson, WV to Columbus, OH (which seems to also go by the 45N), but I never could quite figure out what it was. I need a scanner...
All I can tell ya for sure is that they head northbound through Athens headed in the direction of Columbus. I've used this site to figure out mileposts and CPs, and to make some guesses on train symbols though: [link]

looking at that site does not look like any of the trains go by me though there are like 6 or 8 coal trains that head through south bend IN east or west on the ns and cn

Precisely my problem. Such is the life of railfanning on a secondary route. Not enough other people doing it to mooch information from.

I think we have some coal trains around here as well, though from what I can gather, they come through mostly at about 12 and 3 in the morning just about daily. I always here them rumbling by outside my window, often with dynamic brakes howling if it's a southbound. The most exciting thing we have happen around here are the heat restrictions, making the trains travel at a more railfan-friendly speed, or the recent CSX coal train derailment at Quantico, I think due to the heat as well. Made things interesting for Amtrak and VRE for a while. Amtrak had to bus people from Richmond to DC (!!!) and VRE suspended service on their Fredericksburg line the day after the derailment. That had to SUCK for those people affected...

Not that I know of, but I think they had to replace a good deal of track, and of course, move the cars outta the way.
