Description Here is something I've been interested in for a long time. I love optical illusions and I saw a number of "impossible objects" on this page here: [link] I studied one of them and I tried to make one based on my best guess how it might be made. (if there were instructions for these, I didn't look for them because it was fun trying to figure it out myself).
Anyway, here is my first attempt to make one of these.
BTW, this is made from folded card stock.

Here is the solution to the "Impossible Object." [link] [link]

You should show me how it works to me it looks computer made but its not filed as such so I guess its not

Well, if you check the links you'll see the object from different angles. That will show how the illusion is done.

Wow, great work! It's a perfect illusion!

Thank you, though as you might imagine, it's certainly not my design. I will take credit for figuring out how to do it without looking for the solution.

I couldn't even do something like that with a solution, I guess...

I don't know. It was fun trying. You probably could too if you found it to be fun as well.

There are many 2-D versions of this optical illusion. I saw the 3-D image and just figured out how one might do it. Remember, the trick with 3-D versions of things like this is that they only have to look convincing from _one_ angle for the photograph. [link]

Just check over the net and you'll probably find all kinds of examples of 3-D optical illusions like these.
(some of my favourites are the sculptures that look like old piles of junk but their shadows look like people or animals or other objects.)

I always wonder how they figure out how to put the image onto paper. The planning must be difficult and the mindset must be a rare thing to have for that.

werewolf226 In reply to Frohickey [2009-07-12 16:09:51 +0000 UTC]

no kidding
i tried to copy a simple illusion onto a piece of paper and i screwed up like two or three times.
i'm so hopeless for this kinda thing

Frohickey In reply to werewolf226 [2009-07-14 01:53:19 +0000 UTC]

It takes a bit of practice to get the mind set to see the effect.

ok maybe just a tad
but i just cant get over how fricken awesome this stuff is.
honestly i didn't know that all of this stuff even exsisted
i knew what illusions were ever since i was born, but this, this is insane

I saw a guy who built one of M. Escher's designs out of Lego. [link]

i just saw the lego thing
now that is pretty cool
u can see of course how he did it but its still incredible
he also got the guy sitting with the puzzle in his hand lol
nice!

Photography makes the 3D illusion possible because your point of view is completely controlled.

yeah but with drawings its a 2D picture that can be manipulated into anything you can possibly imagine
and some1 like u could probably imagine quite alot........

yes well with a two dimensional picture id say it would be easier than 3d

I like it . I have also created impossible 3D images, but they've been rendered. Virtual worlds have the advantage that it's easier to precisely arrange objects, cameras and lights. In your case, that has been a bit more difficult, but the result looks good, so well done! Some impressive high-precision scissoring.

Frohickey In reply to eriban [2009-06-16 09:48:17 +0000 UTC]

Well, I don't know about high-precision. There's a lot of fiddling around before it actually works.

DarthPeppy In reply to Frohickey [2009-05-28 06:23:55 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I've got a sketch of that design somewhere in an old "mysteries"-type book I first read back in the 80's...

-BUT, now to try & create it FOR REAL---(with no optical illusions, either!!!)

(may require an inter-dimensional destabilizer, though...)
