Description Here is something I've been interested in for a long time. I love optical illusions and I saw a number of "impossible objects" on this page here: [link] I studied one of them and I tried to make one based on my best guess how it might be made. (if there were instructions for these, I didn't look for them because it was fun trying to figure it out myself).
Anyway, here is my first attempt to make one of these.
BTW, this is made from folded card stock.

Here is the solution to the "Impossible Object." [link] [link]

I really do not care if "the shadow is right or not," is like trying to see where a magician pulls rabbits. The fact is that the main item is perfect and is a great example of tribar Penrose. For me it is EXCELLENT ..!

I can see the seem on the intersection on the far left. Still pretty awesome, though.

That may depend on the monitor; I can't see it myself.

The shadow.

Frohickey In reply to wolfofsummerbreeze [2012-05-11 03:19:36 +0000 UTC]

If you study the image, the shadow is correct on that side.

wolfofsummerbreeze In reply to Frohickey [2012-05-11 07:01:13 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I know. What I mean is that the shadow gives it away.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Frohickey In reply to wolfofsummerbreeze [2012-05-12 02:26:56 +0000 UTC]

Not really because since the object is supposed to show two views at the same time, the shadow on that side is accurate.

wolfofsummerbreeze In reply to Frohickey [2012-05-12 18:48:59 +0000 UTC]

I don't think you're getting the point. The shadow is accurate, yes, but it also gives away how the "impossible object" is constructed. The object isn't "supposed to show two views at the same time" because that's actually not only physically impossible but really bad wording. It's only showing one thing that looks like another, but the shadow gives away what the true shape you are looking at is. Of course, I'm not sure how you could make a shadow for the impossible object anyhow.

i just spent like 5 min trying to figure out how you did it!! xD its awesome

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Frohickey In reply to HubschMondes [2012-02-27 15:43:10 +0000 UTC]

It's all about the line of sight. In a photo, it works perfectly but in real life you have to line up your view along a specific line or the illusion vanishes.

Lol, the shadow kinda gives it away...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Frohickey In reply to MahouSakuraTenshi [2010-10-15 14:03:09 +0000 UTC]

Not entirely. If you look at the way the shape is meant to lie, then there would only be the shadow along side the horizontal section. Remember, it's an illusion; it's an impossible object.

silvahedgehog1013 [2010-09-05 15:21:58 +0000 UTC]

the trick to figure out this optical illusion is not the object itself... but whats around it... notice there is a shadow where the object should have connected. So once you figure out where the shadow comes from, you have figured out the trick to the impossible object

Frohickey In reply to silvahedgehog1013 [2010-09-06 05:26:20 +0000 UTC]

I could have photo-shopped the shadow in but I wanted to avoid any tricks. I should have thought out the lighting a bit better.
