Historical (My Cannon, not acual)-
With the growing decline of the Imperial factions and "Enemy" star fighters constantly improving, One Imperial leader began to design newer fighters to try to match the current generation of Republic fighters.
The first was the TIE Saber, a welcome addition to the Imperial Fleet and replaced the Tie/in as the main base deployable fighter.

Personal note-
Based on the Tie interceptor, the idea I had was that it was designed as a replacement for the aging Tie/In (the standard/common Ties) so, from the beginning, it was design to be more like the X-wing than a simple Tie. The Thought was design with the idea using "spare parts" for the Sienar Fleet Systems Tie/in and TIE Interceptor. I think it turned out well.
The only reason for the S-foil was that the wings can fold up for easy storage, allowing more room for more fighters aboard ships and at bases. As I came up with more designs, this fighter became more of a planetary/system Patrol fighter than a full fleet fighter.
