Description I just want all you photoshop users to know gimp won't go down without a fight. This is more a "statement" piece then an awesome piece of art. The background is empty so if you have any idea's I'd appreciate it. I'm not saying photohsop is bad, but after downloading it I came to realize that even thought it's a more advance program it doesn't allow you to freely create anything. Too many rules that you have to follow when all I really want to do is make something artistic

I think I'll stick with gimp so- QUIT TRYING TO GIVE ME THE SERIAL!

Is it okay if I use both except my ps is nothing but crap to me and I only used it for some use in life.

I love GIMP, Blender, and Inkscape.

Despite being free, they are just as good as their overpriced counterparts, and easier to use.

GIMP all the way! This coming from someone who's tried nearly every image editing program out there. XD

While I do use both Photoshop and GIMP, lately I've been leaning more towards GIMP, especially after they introduced the single window screen. Some of my more recent works have been done in GIMP. My main complaints are I don't know how to switch brushes after I download new ones and that GIMP doesn't seem to handle textures as well as Photoshop can (at least I haven't been able to get it to work).

I did start working on an old picture. This was my first time doing lineart in PS after...months I believe. I eventually just started the lineart over in GIMP. I find doing lineart in GIMP a lot easier and less painful in GIMP due to larger handles and marks so they're easier to see and grab. In Photoshop, they're so tiny you have to zoom in so far, and once you're close enough, you don't really see too much of the line. At least that's my experience.

I do plan on holding onto Photoshop, but at this point, I would embrace the idea of using GIMP exclusively if I need to abandon Photoshop.

Oh, however I found that if you learn Photoshop, then most of the other drawing programs will be alot easier to pick up since most of them are less complex versions of PS. That's one of the only advantages, apart from Photoshop being an industry standard program

Gashu-Monsata [2011-05-08 02:41:37 +0000 UTC]

To be honest, if you have the ability to draw, then any program you use shouldn't limit you from creating something interesting. ^^

Gimp is a pain in the arse to use. I guess its okay for more unprofessional use but otherwise it has very bad user interface. Its free though... so... *shrug*. Naturally if you started with gimp and never used anything else, it is very difficult to see its flaws.

Also, I have tried searching very hard, but I have not found a VERY good piece of artwork created on gimp. Either the better artists absolutely hate it or its just too difficult to use in order to create an intricate piece.

It looks allright, not the best to be honest.

There are issues with colors and its consistency, and it can definitely be better. The blurring is inconsistent with distance and movement as well.

This artist would have such an easier and more professional time with photoshop.

I've used both. Compared to PS, GIMP is more simple. :3
There are some features though, I wish were more like Photoshop. :/

Personally I've tried both. True, PS is more advanced, but anything you can do in PS you can do in gimp; you just may need to mess around a bit until you can figure it out... and gimp is free! Who would want to spend all that money when you can get this awesome software that is just as good for absolutely nothing?

With ps, even if you own the copy, you can only use it on one computer unless you buy rights for other computers. That's why I can use it; because I own a copy I got with my Wacom, but it won't work with this computer because it's on my old one, and my old one won't even start so I can't do anything about it.

Gimp doesn't cost anything and I can have as many copies on as many different computers as I want.

I'll stick with Gimp.

Gimp is very, but calling photoshop bad is a big understatement. Currently I use GIMP not because it is free, but because it is open source. And I do believe open source is the future.

Gimp needs a GUI revamp like Blender did with the latest 2.5 version and a proper MAC version because lets face it , X11 on mac sucks big time.

But in the end if you do dgitial painting you only need a handful of tools and features, GIMP exceed anyone expectation easily and it can be used for very serious work and compete head to head with photoshop.

I just love to use open source apps, and I use also Blender, MyPaint and UBUNTU even though my main platfrom is macos.

What I love about GIMP vs Photoshop is that unlike photoshop it is utilises python for scripting and python is an extemely powerful programming language and dead easy to use. IT make making plugins a breeze , even for those that dont do much programming like myself. I dont see myself utilising alot of python for GIMP but if I do its great to know that I can fire up my python knowldege and do magic photoshop can only dream of.

GIMP FTW

Maybe a big gimp screen around the gimp cat-thing and a small photoshop screen around the photoshop feather

I use both GIMP and Photoshop CS2, mainly because PS CS2 lacks a function that I find useful when making tutorials: easy import of images as new layers.
(I do plan to upgrade to CS5 soon; CS2 has a minor compatibility with the Aero style on Windows Vista and 7.)

I prefer PS personally, mainly because I hate the way GIMP's toolbox windows are set up.

Actually, GIMP has less features than photoshop, along with more rules. It's harder to navigate as well.

GIMP is alright, I suppose. But for me, it's a billion times more finicky than Photoshop CS4.

I can work on very large images in photoshop, no problem. But the same image opened in GIMP? I can't do anything.

But, I'm not giving up on GIMP. I'd like to try my hand at painting with it
