Description This was an old, unfinished project that fell by the wayside a couple years ago. My aim was to draw every enemy in every Nintendo NES game. There are some more than this, but these are the only coloured pics.

I'd started Donkey Kong, DK Junior, Kid Icarus, Metroid and Zelda as well, and all of them were in this slightly cute style. Regardless of why I didn't use it, this was really the first time I developed my current style.

I rearranged and labelled them especially for dA though

(Hammer Bros. was missed out by mistake.)

Wasn't there a seal enemy in Ice Climber?

In the original Japanese version, the seal was Topi, and this was replaced for the US and arcade versions.

This is quite an old piece, and I doubt I'd make such a shocking omission next time

The condor from "Ice Climber" isn't an enemy...

The condor steals vegetables and hides at the top of the mountain. Popo and Nana climb the mountain to get the vegetables back. I'd say at the very least the Condor is not on your side.

Also, the manual disagrees with you, grouping it with the enemies:
"But watch out - the Nitpicker, condors and Polar Bears don't want you up there."

I though the condor was just something Nana and Popo went after at the end, since it doesn't attack them in any way...

I like these a lot, especially how you gave the Mario Bros. enemies some personality.

fryguy64 In reply to HakuryuVision [2008-11-03 09:03:37 +0000 UTC]

They're pretty much the same thing. In the arcade game, the Shellcreepers even jump out of their shells (complete with shorts and t-shirt) and push their shell the right way up!

There were a lot of things in the very early Mario games that provided inspiration for Super Mario Bros. Pipes, springboards, turtles, girders, tree platforms...

But i think mario-fanatics will kill me if i don't tell them... appart? Held appart? (sorry, my english is not perfect)

I think most of the old enemies appeared and the mario&luigi superstar saga games.

Excellent. Gotta love the classic. Really cool take on the characters. You should do the DK family of classic games next!

I actually had the inked DK enemies for this, but they were pretty rushed and pretty dire, so I left them out of the lineup.

I have been thinking about doing something like this again though. It's good fun!

Great layout boss, but no offense where is the seal from Ice Climbers, I know it was replaced by the yeti.

Unira - it's Japanese for "Urchin". It was stupid that they didn't translate it for Brawl, as he's listed as "Urchin" in the NES manual, and even Bubbles' Melee trophy.

I love these! I love how you drew them all. I like how you included some obscure games like Gyromite. (A fun game, even though I don't have a ROB.) I like the look on the "needlenose" balloonfighter's face as his balloon pops.

One enemy missing though, I noticed is Foreman Spike in Wrecking Crew. (Among my fave NES titles.) I like how they incorportated the hammer theme of Wrecking Crew into SSBBrawl for the rare golden hammer item.

fryguy64 In reply to Beau-Skunk [2008-06-07 18:58:56 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I didn't include any "main" characters, including boss characters, predominantly because when I drew these I was still thinking the mains would show up as Nintendo All-Stars. Which obviously slipped by the wayside a little

So Foreman Spike was going to be separate. Although there's a sketch of him somewhere in my gallery methinks. I'm actually still trying to sketch him to my liking - it's tricky-dicky.

I hoped they would use that Wrecking Crew tune for the Golden Hammer. Bloody hard to find in the game though

Beau-Skunk In reply to fryguy64 [2008-06-07 19:17:41 +0000 UTC]

I think Wrecking Crew is availible for download in the Wii's Virtual Console system. I even hear it has one upgrade, you can now save your custom-made levels from the game's level design mode. (Same with Excitebike.) I'm not sure, but I think you could do that in the Japanese versions of the game via the Famicom Disk system, or something.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

fryguy64 In reply to Beau-Skunk [2008-06-08 00:56:39 +0000 UTC]

You can indeed. The save function (Excitebike, Wrecking Crew & Mach Rider) never made it out of Japan as you had to save the data on tapes. The Famicom Data Recorder was given a U.S. release, but was cancelled - which is why the 3 games compatible with it had broken save functions.

Beau-Skunk In reply to fryguy64 [2008-06-08 03:03:17 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I hear by the time they were going to bring the Famicom DIsk System to the USA, NES cartridges had already become more advanced to hold more data for games, and ever sence Zelda, a battery back-up system to save games. So that stuff became unnessacerry.

YOU MISSED OUT HAMMER BR-Oh right.

I love this. The enemies are full of character and the setup works really well. Shame you never finished it really.

fryguy64 In reply to professorfandango [2008-06-07 12:10:29 +0000 UTC]

I did ink a Hammer Bro, but never coloured it. I considered bolting it on to the end here in black and white, but figured that might be a bit lame

I might try and take on this project again. But the main reason I stopped was because it was such a big project. The other reason was that I ended up trapped in a debate with myself over whether I should base them on the NES sprites, or whether I should take future designs into account, or merge styles... (which became a nightmare when Zelda and Metroid got involved).
