Description
I noticed that the feature that define the character the most is the hairstyle. You know, like in manga style where each female character has the same face but different hair.
I had this problem for a looong time and I'm still working on in. So today I make a little excercise for myself - first I've drew one hairstyle and then I tried to draw 3 different faces. So even if the hair and color scheme is the same, the character is still unique. It was a bit hard to fit the face in exsisting hair but at the end I was quite satisfied from the results. And then I noticed how ugly that hair is XD so I copied only the faces and gave them new haircuts. it shows perfectly how hairstyle can change a person!
below you can see a little tutorial I've made about face features that will help you to improve your skill of drawing random faces c: enjoy~!

if you wan't to say 'hey, that's not "variety" because they're all conventionally attractive, young and femine' that's because it was a part of my challenge to draw 3 conventionally attractive, young, femine faces that still are recognizable and different, even if they're very similiar at first look. to show that they're still many ways to draw 'common pretty girl face'. it wasn't be much a challenge to draw one chubby girl, one old lady, one girl with a giant scar across her face and say 'hey, they're different!', don't you think?. of course that I could do more that I did, but it's really difficult to fit a new face into existing drawing of the hairstyle. don't believe me? then try and show me your results! I challenge you!

How do you decide the colors you want to use for shading? I have always had trouble with my techniques.

Oh wow, at first glance I thought the top three were the same person. Shows a lot about how hair really defines the character.

Ya, i noticed a time back that a lot of my faces looked the same so i started trying to draw my characters differently as well. all of them have different bodies anyway so why not

Cool! But imo they still look a lot like the same.... at least to me. Thats because they all have specific features in common: The light reflection on the nose, same skin-tone, the checks... I dunnno, but if you would change this stuff ist would lokk a lot more dofferent, i think!

I would love if, someday soon, you'd do a tutorial on eyes. They are the most unconvincing and unattractive thing I draw (poorly). Your's are somewhere between your own style and Disney Eyes and I love them, and am still horrible.
Thank you for being.

Wow! What an awesome exercise!!
I didn't even notice that it was the same three faces until I read the description and looked back.
Never really acknowledged how powerful hairstyle really is.
Again, very awesome!

Many people really do forget that people have super varying face structures. I think I should improve on different faces myself.

I really like the soft textures and the hair looks very pretty. I also like that you are expanding on you're style and trying to distort it a bit to see what you do like and don't like. I am inspired to try the same with my own artwork.😊

except they all have big eyes, full brows, full lips, conventionally attractive, young, feminine faces. idk i'm not actually seeing that much of a difference

like Fukari said herself
they're all ""attractive feminine faces"" but they all look like different people.
and they all seem to have slightly different ages and the expressions also give them kind of a personality, even though they're all smiling, imo.
the differences don't have to be drastic for there to be variety

Fukari In reply to crocobit [2016-02-23 20:14:37 +0000 UTC]
that would be easy to draw one chubby girl, one old lady, one girl with a giant scar across her face and say 'hey, they're different!' but here I wanted to draw 3 conventionally attractive, young, femine faces that still are recognizable and different even if they're very similiar at first look (same color scheme(at first part) probably same age and bodytype). that's the part of the challenge, to show that they're still many ways to draw 'common pretty girl face'

All those features are relatively the same size, yes, but they are definitely different shapes... how can you not see this?

crocobit In reply to Kelathi [2016-02-23 19:19:26 +0000 UTC]
??? thats not rly enough to make a distinct variety of faces like there are in the real world. the artist said they wanted to improve so i gave honest constructive criticism lol

pigeon In reply to crocobit [2016-02-28 18:05:23 +0000 UTC]
Imho, it's actually way harder to take three different types of faces that otherwise look very similar and just tweak their features to make them look definitively different than it would be to take three people of entirely different races, body shapes, skin types, scar types, etc because they wouldn't even be similar to begin with, so they'd already have different features right off the bat if that makes any sense. It might be more inclusive and "cover more ground" so to speak, but easier.

Kelathi In reply to crocobit [2016-02-23 20:43:45 +0000 UTC]
Of course there's not going to be a variety of face that represents what there is in the whole world, that would be a huge post XD All's I'm saying is you suggested they all looked the same, which is confusing because although the features are relatively the same size, they are indeed all different shapes?
