Used Ps CS3, please note me if something doesn't work on older or more recent versions. If you have questions or just feel the need to point out a mistake comment okay?
Enjoy your backgrounds!!
And yes, I know there are more tuts on DA about this topic but I fel the need to show you how I do it

How do you get this to work with color? like how you did for the background of the tutorial. I'm trying to get blue dots on a pale yellow background.

well follow the tutorial in black and white. than use the magic wand tool to select the white background, make sure to have selected all of it, (right click on the white area than choose ), make another layer and paint on it with the color you want, the selected area will make sure that you'll get the right shape. If you don't get any color it is beacuse the image is most likely set in black and white mode so go to adjustments>mode> than select RGB or CYMK, better go for CYMK if it's for print. Now repet with the black dots. you can skipp puting them on new lyers but you know, it's easier if you mess up to fix like this. Hope i helped you, get back to me if you still have trouble

I can't say i really understood your problem fully, or at least what you said that was happening but I got it that you said that you get some color in the middle of the dots. There are more things that can cause this, again i didn't really understand the whole situation, but. First of all you need to be sure you worked on a new layer and that the gradient was black. No color added. Pure jet black. Than, you need to make sure that it is a white layer! Use the bucket tool and fill the whole layer with white than add the gradient. Than you need to make sure the channels are set right. I set them all at 10, sure you can try other combinations, but this set gives the effect that I've shown in my tutorials. I think that the problem might come from not using a black gradient. You need to do so in order for it to work. You can lock the pixels of the layer when you have your tone done and get it in any other color you want but the base has to be black otherwise it will read your colours and will try to break them into basic tones, which migth result into either overlapping of dots or into having a dot of colour in the middle of a black dot. I really hoped it helped, try it again and if you still have problems just leave another reply and I'll try my best to help you fix it.

I donΒ΄t know why when I do it in black and white is ok, but is I do it in color it dosenΒ΄t work well QAQ

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FullAnimeZone In reply to Yuki-Mori-Okami [2011-02-12 15:31:00 +0000 UTC]

yes i know about this problem, what you can do though is to make it black and white just like the tut shows and than
a) make another layer over that one and set it on screen and paint over
or
b) click on one of the black spots by using the magic wand tool and than left click and selct grow similar and than paint over
try these methods and tell me if it worked

Is there anyway to do ths in SAI?
or it there a tutorial for this on SAI?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

FullAnimeZone In reply to OpticPessamist [2011-02-02 08:32:10 +0000 UTC]

i just got SAI 3 days ago but from what i know there isn't such a filter in it, however i saw some downloadable patterns with screentones, yet i'm not sure how useful they really are...
if you want, i know this amazing artist which i really respect, =Guitarheroineno1 and i know she works with SAI, i'm quite sure she'll answer your question better than i could
