Description
I've put this off for too long. This comic has been wasting away in my stash for the past week, so I figured "screw it," and just upload it regardless of how I feel about it. The few people I showed it to seemed to like it, so I think that may have boosted my confidence in this comic.
Anyways, this is the comic I made while on vacation . At the time, I was playing Mystic Square a whole lot, and I felt like fleshing out the characters, particularly Alice. However, I only planned the part where Mai and Yuki bully Alice for being a human, so everything after that was pretty much made up on the spot (keep in mind: this was done without any internet, so I couldn't check the wiki for information). As I'd finished the comic, I came to a realization: this sounds an awful lot like Puella Magi Madoka Magika. I think that anime may have had some kind of subconscious effect while I was writing this. Honestly, I was just making stuff up as I went along.
Still, I hope you like this comic regardless of the similarities and possible canon errors.

I love that you make use of Rengeteki, when so many other fans would turn a blind eye in favor of an established character. I loved the role she played here, so you can be darn sure I was happy with that. ^^

The Stage 5 midboss makes an appearance in the next part. I really do intend to squeeze every use of the side characters for all they're worth.

It really bugs me that KirbyM decided to included only Rengeteki and leave out the rest of the nameless crew (Including Seihou's cast as well). Perhaps someone should consider making customs for the rest of the PC-98 crew, that would be a neat thing to have if only due to the fact they need to see the light of day in their original outfits at the very least.
Plus I've noticed that a lot of people have been trying to make vanilla Walfas renditions of them as of recent. Perhaps I might do it if I find the time to do it. Who knows?

Touhou fact: Alice is based on SMT/Persona Alice. Her title in MS was the girl of death and she was consider to have formidable magic. This kinda makes the "Shinki's favorite" funnier in hindsight since SMT Alice is taken care by two Goetia demons.

How *does* becoming a youkai mean becoming less of a person?

Well, they have extended lifespans which can lead to issues further down the road (Remember Alice Dere?). They also become detached from basic human needs such as sleep and hunger, but apparently still do it from habit. Beyond that, I'm not sure, but keep in mind what I wrote in the description.
I'm not trying to say that your criticism is invalid; I ran into the same question as I was writing this comic. That's part of the reason I felt unsure about whether I liked it.

Just asking no criticism or anything like that. But is Byakuren considered a youkai or just an immortal magician?

Her species is listed as "Magician" , so she's most likely a Magician-Youkai.

Is there an easy way to do markup in DA or do I have to type it out by hand?
I really wish DA would use []'s instead of <>'s, the former are so much more fluid.

The only way I know how is with < a href="url">URL TEXT.< /a>
The space before the "a href" and "/a" obviously needs to be omitted.

"Remember Alice Dere?"
You mean the music video? If you're implying that the problem is outliving loved ones then the solution is simple: immortality for *everyone.*

Actually, it's more than that: in the eastern worldview that Touhou uses, becoming a youkai is increasing the amount of impurity an entity has, and humans are higher in the karma ladder than youkai. Becoming one would be like giving up humanity and an opportunity to enlightment.

So...a racial concept of purity then, and how certain races are inherently immoral. I've read up on that in the Southern Poverty Law Center when I was younger. It's an interesting story how I got there: there was this FPS (back when the genre was good) called Gathering Storm which was influenced by a book written by Morris Dees who's the head of the SPLC (an acronym I keep mixing up with SFPL)...
Oh, right, were were talking about racial purity. What do you and other fellow nationals think about the concept?

It's not racial, but rather spiritual (because youkai, humans are rather spiritual categories), according to the eastern worldview used in Touhou. I saw a discussion in this thread about this here tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?… though you can ask again in the thread, they're always returning to the same issues, but yep, youkai are born of fears and sins of humans, then they'd have at least a tendency to be immoral, at least in Japanese lore (though this can change with their choices, not to mention lore is always changing: the first stories with tengus portrayed them as chaotic evil demons, but relatively more recent stories have portrayed them helping pilgrims). So, in a sense, the problem is not much Alice living forever, but becoming something worse than a human.
Brazil is a very racially diverse country, and I think it be a really good thing, granted there's still racism lingering.

"So, in a sense, the problem is not much Alice living forever, but becoming something worse than a human."
Yet many "worse-than-humans," one activist youkai magician in particular, have shown themselves to be very decent people. Alice herself ends up being one of the most straight-laced characters in the series in spite of her "youkainess." Compare her to that "ordinary" human magician...

Yes, in a sense, the correlation between purity and morality isn't one, though there are very good chances that Marisa isn't going to stay human for too long.

The karma list would probably go something like this (from highest to lowest): celestials/lunarians, saints, hermits, humans, and youkai.

Plugging empirical evidence into that hypothesis, that would mean Tenshi's the most enlightened cast member in spite of her teenage antics, and that Satori is comparatively savage in spite of her motherly occupation. That's just one example.
I'm curious, where would Hina fit into this continuum?

MikhailCarter In reply to AlgaeNymph [2014-09-12 22:15:46 +0000 UTC]
I wouldn't say that it is absolute. The purity scale would pretty much fall into the "power scale" debate where there would be a lot of exceptions.

AlgaeNymph In reply to MikhailCarter [2014-09-13 02:04:31 +0000 UTC]
At least the power scale arguments are based on empirical observations, the race-based purity scale is based on just-so stories (at best) and not on individual merit. Purity has no place outside of chemistry.

Hau...seeing two of my favorite characters as bullies of children kind of disturbs me.
Still though, this comic was really well-written, and I can definitely see the Madoka inspiration! xD

I like this comic a lot, actually. I hope you make a mini-series from it. I don't think you should worry too much about canon. A good enough story is worth it.

I know well enough that good writing beats adhering to canon; I exercise artistic license quite frequently. However, that doesn't quite stop me from worrying over people disliking something simply because it isn't canon, or whatever reason they'd have. Don't get me wrong: people are more than entitled to their own opinions about my work. I think the problem is that I get the internet equivalent of stage fright whenever I attempt something more serious than a gag comic.
