Description

When Reimu and Alice take a moment to mourn Marisa's passing, the Scarlet Devil Residents stop by to take back what belongs to them.

This is my attempt at a "Tragedy of a Long Life." Marisa always made the excuse that the people she steals from can just take it all back when she dies, so I decided base this comic around that. Personally, I think the best ToaLL's are the ones that try to tell a story along with the grief, rather than just say "Oh look, X's friend/love interest/person-who-knew-X outlived them. Isn't that sad?" Please let me know what you think of this story!

Thanks. Patchy being a total jerkface is probably the biggest issue people have with this. While I can see their point, I still think it works in my opinion. After all, we don't know what Marisa did in the intervening years that may have caused a falling out. But hey, it's just your opinion, and I shouldn't try to change it.

Thanks so much for the feedback.

I think the ambiguity of that plot-point is why people are so angered.

Like I said, I still adored this. It just got me wondering what happened during that period of time.

For once in my life, I shall say this only to this Patchy, but here it is;
You little bitch.

If you look closely, one can see that Flandre seems to be the only member of the SDM crew to be really saddened by Marisa's death. She needs a hug

It's always quite a thing to ponder about in the future of Touhou and its characters. I just hope it is not bittersweet like this. Comic is very tear-jerking and hits the feels quite well.

Well, I'd have Reimu and Alice mourn her together in this situation, too, admittedly...

I must say, Patchy's attitude is much more scathing than her usual snark. I mean, Reimu and the SDM have had pretty good relations EoSD. I think it would enhance the comic if you could explain what happened between then.

Kaze-Hiku In reply to Zer0beat [2014-01-02 19:16:11 +0000 UTC]

I think Patchouli's snark was directed more at the deceased Marisa. After all, Marisa did nothing but steal books fro Patchouli's library (which would obviously worsen Patchy's mood over the years). In addition, I would imagine that the (implied) death of Sakuya would affect Patchouli as well, since Sakuya used to serve her tea. As Lunatic-Overlord has pondered, Remilia was probably affected by Sakuya's (implied) death around this time. Patchouli would probably be affected the same way.

The way she talks about Reimu's shrine is very disrespectful though. True, it's always described to be in a shabby condition. I don't think the relationship between the three magicians has been one of spite but of annoyance and nothing more.

To speak ill of the deceased is even MORE disrespectful, keeping Japanese culture and values in mind. Youkai and non-humans may be older than humans and eat them but they also have manners too.

Kaze-Hiku In reply to Zer0beat [2014-01-02 20:11:31 +0000 UTC]

1. Considering what Reimu's shrine has been through in the past Windows games, I think it's safe to say her shrine is probably on the brink of total collapse at this point from minor problems.

2. While the three magicians are usually annoying each other, Patchouli has primarily been losing books to Marisa. Imagine how many books Marisa will probably steal throughout the course of her lifetime. It's like someone comes in and takes all of your personal belongings without any promise of return soon. While I am just making conjecture here, I'd imagine that the loss of so many books to the deceased witch and the loss of the friendly tea-making maid would make Patchouli quite bitter towards Marisa.

3. You got me on that third point. Even though the residents of the SDM display European mannerisms and clothing, they probably adopted Japanese culture and honor after learning to reside in Gensokyo peacefully.

Overall, though, this comic still causes quite a few feels.

Hata no Kokoro's ending actually shows Reimu getting donations, even if it's not that much more than usual. Arguably, an old lady would have more time to spend renovating a shrine rather than lying around and complaining about being bored.

Patchy doesn't seem to make much of an effort trying to retrieve her books, and Marisa makes it completely known that people that she's taken things form can have things back. No one seems to have any objections with that because non-humans understand the lifespans of humans are much shorter.

Personally, I believe that Sakuya's body is in a frozen state thanks to her powers, similar to a Lunarian (let's not get into that though). Or maybe I'm just saying that because I think seeing the servant lose her master and friends is much more heart breaking than a master who knew her servant was destined to part.

I've really only seen stuff from the Mokou side of Tragedy of Long Life, but she's an angst magnet on her own.

Kaze-Hiku In reply to Zer0beat [2014-01-03 01:18:52 +0000 UTC]

1. You make a good point here, but considering how lazy Reimu tends to be when no incidents are occurring (as well as an old lady having problems doing physical labor), the shrine could easily fall into disrepair once she's old enough to be considered a senior citizen.

2. While non-human lifespans are indeed much longer, Patchouli does seem to be greatly irked by Marisa's thievery. While one can argue that Patchouli could just be waiting for Marisa's death, one can also argue that Patchouli has very poor physical health and won't make the effort to journey to the Forest of Magic on a given day.

3. Yeah, let's avoid this topic speculation for now....

4. Mokou is one hell of an angst magnet, especially when you consider her backstory (attacking anything in her path for a few hundred years, then being bored and alone for the next few hundred years? That's enough to drive most people insane!).
