Description This is my second submission to the Walfas Music Contest.

This one was a marathon to create, mostly because I tend to make backgrounds the same way I play The Sims 2 in Build Mode. Still, I'm glad I pressed through in making it, because I was blown away the moment I heard this song, and I just knew I had to make a comic based on it. Special thanks to DeityDiz93 for creating the character customs made for this comic.

-Best Touhou Tearjerker/Drama
-Best Use of a Non-English Song
-Best Use of Vanilla Props
-Best Use of Custom Props

The song is by "RD-Sounds," and you can listen to it here.

Was your opinion of this song affected in any way by the other two...one where it sounds like Shinki is disapproving of Alice's life, the other in which Alice apparently kills a Shanghai?

Judging on a whole, it looks like RD-Sounds was going for "bigtime disappointment" rather than "my wonderful beloved daughter".

Doesn't take away from this in any way, of course, just something to think about.

Care to elaborate on your interpretation? In the hundreds of times I listened to this song while making this, not once did it cross my mind that it carried some kind of negative double-meaning. To me, the lyrics sound loving and sweet, while the instrumentation sounds uplifting and inspirational.

I'm not saying your opinion on it is invalid; music is entirely subjective. I'm just wanting to hear more about where you're coming from on this.

Not this one.Β  The OTHER...oh dammit, yep, I was too cute about this.Β  I hate when that happens...

All right, better late than never.Β  Links to the second and third songs of the "trilogy", same uploader:
Hikari - Miscarried Princess
Alice of the Land of the Iron Sand

No joke, felt a fair amount of emotional whiplash the first time I heard them.Β  I'd be more than happy to hear anyone's interpretations, of course.

Ah, I see. It hadn't occurred to me that there was a trilogy of songs that presented an overarching storyline. I had heard of Alice of the Land of the Iron Sand, but not Miscarried Princess. Now I see where you got the depressing vibes from.

Listening to Miscarried Princess, I feel as though it's Alice offering an ironic echo of the things Shinki had hoped for her while struggling with some kind of depression. The lyrics hinting me towards this are:

  • "With all my heart, I want to be closer to you, who once gave birth to me." Shinki is often thought to be the mother of Alice, so it wouldn't make sense if she were singing this.
  • "Just as I wished, when I set my hands upon "it" - I didn't look back." Possible reference to the Alice obtaining the Grimoire.
  • "Going through the actions of creating a world..." It's not directly stated in Mystic Square, but it's possible that the "Wonderland" the Extra Stage takes place in was created by Alice.
  • "A maiden healding freedom and release dances amongst white walls as they fill with color." I'm kinda stretching here, but this sounds like a danmaku battle. It's possible Alice may have caught a glimpse of this Spell Pattern during Makai's final moments.

Finally, with Alice of the Land of the Iron Sand, I think Alice just ends up committing suicide. Ain't that a happy ending?

You did Full! You made it first place with this!! Congratulations!

It's been an honor helping you out with this. If only I had actually finished all those customs completely at the time. I'm still glad this was able to win.

What's funny is that this comic ended up winning so hard, it won in a category it wasn't even in. I won Best Use of Lyrics as Dialogue despite not entering in that category. Don't worry, I've decided to give the trophy away to the runner up, KentaMaeba as a result.

I find myself pleasantly surprised whenever I win at a contest. I didn't think I'd win first place in the Rule 9 contest because I believed Monty Python to be overplayed, yet I floored the competition. I didn't think this would win because the PC-98 characters are underloved, yet this annihilated when it came to votes. Maybe I underestimate my skill in Walfas, but I find it's better to think I'll lose, then win, than to think I'll win, then lose.

This gives me high hopes for hosting the WSW PC-98 contest in that regard. Honestly though, this comic was all kinds of sweet: the song you choose, the comic itself, the characters in it, and the small touches all contributed to a really amazing comic.

It seems to have hit a soft spot for a number of others based the comments to.Β It doesn't help that Mystic Square's cast holds a very special place in my heart, and I've seen a lot of fans of Touhou PC-98 fans in the group, so I can see why it got a high mark.

But can I attest to the fact that the lyrics contest was full of awesomeness this year? I quite like what people did this time around.

I think of Shinki as more contralto , but this is perfect otherwise.Β  Well done.

While I can buy that in terms of pitch, I still imagine her voice as rather soft-spoken and benevolent in tone. I really don't think of Shinki as a villainous character.

Me neither, even if I did find A Satori's Tale an interesting read.Β  (I'll have to finish it sometime.)

But what I was mainly getting is that I conceptualize Shinki as sounding more womanly than girly.Β  It just bothers me when Japanese women try to please the local patriarchy.

The thing I found a bit off-putting was how...for lack of a better word...cute she made it sound.

Comparison: Calm Eyes Fixed On Me, Screaming. It's the exact same key (and against much louder instrumentation), yet you get a feeling of power, intensity. I think that would've been a better voice for this, because let's be serious, no way in hell is Shinki cuter than Cirno. Β

MYSTIC SQUARE! ALICE AND SHINKI YES!

I'm a real sucker for parental-child stories in the Touhou universe! 12/10! XD

An awesome comic! Β I don't think the mother-daughter relationship between Shinki and Alice is explored enough in fanfiction. Β Everything here looks absolutely stunning.

Clever idea using the bookcases as shelves on a wall. Β I never would have thought of that.

Well knowing you choose this song I had high hopes it would be good, but this turned out incredibly good! You have my votes for the contest for sure!

I'm so glad that I got to contribute to making this song adaption as best it could be. I'm quite happy how you used the characters!
I feel like it's paid proper homage to both the song and the entirety of Mystic Square's cast, I thank you so much for that!

I'll get back to working on the rest of those nameless cast character customs as I'm sure others will want to use them too.

The emotions within this comic and the song. You really hit them, hard.

Also, I'm glad I was able to listen to another great touhou vocal song. I usually can't find good ones or ones that I prefer to listen to.
