Description
Oh shit, I'm going on a stamp rampage again.Yesterday, I was sidelined by one of those lovely little seizure images here on dA. Sadly, a lot of sites leave them perfectly allowed until the particular image has caused MANY problems, because photosensitive epileptics are a very small minority and cleaning up images that many see as humorous (understandably - the vast majority of people can stare directly into them forever without any problems and have never experienced a seizure) would not only be a massive effort, but would really piss off a lot of the people who are so greatly amused by them.
But they're not funny. In people sensitive to them, they can cause seizures. They didn't gain that name because of some archaic, since debunked medical theory. That episode of Pokemon wasn't banned because of violence.
Which, I might add, the Japanese LEARNED from and adopted strict laws in regards to possible seizure triggers on television. Here in the US, where I live, we make fun of it...and TV is still the leading cause of seizures in the photosensitive. Why can't we learn from it, instead of just making fun of "THOSE people" and thinking that such a thing can't - and DOESN'T - happen here?
It happens due to television, and it happens due to internet jokes, sadly enough. And the next time I'm sidelined due to one of these images, I'm not going to take it so quietly.
In the meantime, for an injury-free option, if you would like to promote awareness, please display this stamp, if you can.

1. AND, the jokes are done by people who don't know how to tell a dark joke correctly! (I don't have the best sense of humor, but I can tell a dark joke from mockery... I think.)
2. Aren't websites legally--LEGALLY--required to filter those kinds of animations and give a warning? Last time I checked, yes, they are.

I'm not photosensitive, but sometimes when I look at a flashing picture I get annoyed or might get a headache.

There should be a Mature Content filter for flashing images. Putting "epilepsy warning" in the title doesn't do anything since you can already see the image.

I'm very tempted to start a petition for it if there isn't already one out there. Even if we are a small percentage of the population, anyone can suffer a seizure and you never know who, so I say it's important for those who have them and who haven't had them yet.

Yeah. And seizures can come from things like sickness too. I had nooo idea or warning whatsoever that I would ever have epilepsy. The only thing I really had as a kid was asthma.

It is a warning on video games as well, especially the 3D ones and probably VR games as well.
I agree it is not funny at all and it is serious, people can die from seizures.Β
I had to report a stamp because it gave me a headache and I'm not Epileptic or photosensitive, I can image what it could do to someone who was. (It was even more flashy than a strobe light.) Sorry to whoever made it but you made it way to flashy to look at it.Β

Just saw a stamp that flashed and it was like getting hit by a brick. Despite decent seizure control it still effects me. Headache, dizziness, etc. People are so pathetic to do that.

And then people here say it's not their problem because you shouldn't be on a computer if you have seizures anyway.Β

I propose this compromise. There are people that like seizure stamps and people who don't. I propose in the thumbnail a warning that isn't flashing. Perhaps says "Warning: Seizure stamp. Do not click if you are photosensitive" That would be enough to help.

I hate it when people make fun of it with flashy seziure images or just say 'Sorry if this gives you seizures.' Well if you don't wantΒ it to give someone, Don't put it up!
One of my DA friends is epileptic and it's sad to think so many people are so inconsiderate about it. Personally I don't think it's that hard to take flashy things down so that it won't cause seizures. It's something a lot of people don't think about, but the fact that just having a flashy image there could give someone a seizure is a good enough reason to take it down or avoid using them, you know? Thanks for the stamp.

Thank you for this stamp! It means a lot. I'm not epileptic myself but I had a good friend who was. I've seen several epileptic fits. Not pretty. I hate to imagine the fits that epileptic people are getting from the many seizure stamps I see, and I guarantee somebody has had a fit.

Hi Everyone again!
I am not epiletic myself but I think it's nice thinking in others now and then. I had some doubts about reporting seizure images and the answers I've got might be useful to some of you.
I will put here my experince.

Hi,
I have 2 questions.
1-Should users use "mature content" tag when uploading seizure images?
I searched the faq and it only tells not to use too much these images in journals.
2-If I finnd a journal with excess of said images, what is the right category to submit to the "Help Desk"?
Your report is best suited for the Policy Inquiry section. By submitting your inquiry to the proper category, you ensure it will be looked at in a timely manner by the appropriate staff. I will transfer this ticket to the Policy Inquiry category and you can expect a response as soon as time allows.

Thank you for contacting deviantART customer service, I will be assisting you with your support ticket today.
We suggest that any flashing image which takes up a decent portion of the average screen be tagged as mature content to avoid casual or accidental viewing by those who may suffer from a photosensitive seizure disorder.
In the event that a member has used their journal or other profile page element to display a rapidly flashing image or mosaic of images you may bring it to the attention of our staff for review by filing a "Policy Inquiry" here in customer service.
................................................................
So tagging as mature one single stamp is out of question? When you say a "decent portion of the average screen" it starts from what size (I just want to have an idea)?
................................................................
The size of a single avatar or average deviantART "stamp" is generally too small to be of a concern. Our moderation staff typically reviews flashing images starting from approximately 100 x 100 pixels and larger- the larger it is the more of a concern it can be.
................................................................
Thank you for contacting deviantART customer service, I will be assisting you with your support ticket today.
I have subjected the profile page in question to analysis using the Photosensitive Epilepsy Analysis Tool designed by the University of Wisconsin. This tool recorded and analyzed the images for several factors related to luminance flash and red flash, both of which are believed to present the most risk for a triggering event.
The testing showed that the profile page was given a "Pass" for red flash and a "Pass:Caution" for luminance flash for isolated areas on the page while most areas of the page passed.
Our staff will typically only intervene in situations involving flashing imagery if analysis of the imagery gives a failing result, representing higher risk, which has not happened here.
................................................................
Something that might interest: in the top dark green thing where your nickname is go in your settings > Browsing > Comments > uncheck the option "Show Avatars" > Save
Another one: Do you hate that festival of thumbnails all at once when browsing? > Browsing > General Browsing > Paging > Click through pages > Save!
Only one more thing...watch out with people who send you llamas if you are more likely to have seizures...once I decided to return a llama...half the profile had those annoying images! I changed my mind of course.

I think it's really stupid, too. I get myoclonic seizures, which basically just look like random muscle spasms, but they're not caused by flashing lights. Depending on the person, seizures can be caused by any number of things, or happen randomly. But there are lots of people out there with photosensitive epilepsy, and it's really immature for people to make them with no regard for others. I don't mind people making them for fun if they put a warning preview on it or something, but it's not right to just put them out there with no warning.

I agree, although I'm not epileptic. These flashing lights are so annoying; plus we should practice thinking in others more. Here in dA the following could be done: using the mature tag. So no one is going to be forbidden to see this bad taste image and those who are epileptic wouldn't be exposed to this images. This widget or whatever it is could be implemented to in other sites so as to prevent problems. But now I have a doubt: does any blinking image may afact them no matter how slow the blinking is or only the fast ones and what speed would be?

I went to my Neurologist this morning for a check up and got the random urge to look up what I hoped would be some kind of epilepsy awareness stuff here on dA. Nope!
I do joke about my seizures all the time, but those things are just plain stupid and tottaly insensitive.
Thank you fore making this stamp

Some people are so stupid, aren't they? There's nothing fun about giving someone a seizure. People always find things funny when they don't have to live with the problem and the inconsiderate people who make things worse for them, huh? :/
