I think nowadays, you can't get around of learning english, except you're living in a really small village and without the intention of ever leave it.
I think one thing, that's easier in german than in english is,that you know how a word is spoken after reading it. how should a foreigner know how speak 'Leicester' or why in 'enough' the 'gh' is spoke like 'f' but not in 'knight' (You get really strange looks if you say 'nifft' instead of 'neit').^^"
