I have to remark, that even though informative, the example with the hijab-wearing girl and the not-hijab-wearing girl seems like a pretty stereotype conisderation of clothes. Is the miniskrit a pervertmagnet And does it mean that you should look at the one wearing a hijab with more respect than the one who does not? It seems like that is what you're leading it to. (just saying)
And even though many women are allowed to choose if they are to wear a hijab, do not forget that here's still many men who forces their wife and daughters to wear them against their will. Just trying to say that things are rarely one or the other.

"Is the miniskrit a pervertmagnet And does it mean that you should look at the one wearing a hijab with more respect than the one who does not?"
perverts like to look at the skin. the more the girl shows the more she attracts dirty men to look at her.

I give you another example: a female judge. one wears Hijab and one wears a super mini skirt. now tell me which one people will respect more? I doubt they will choose the one who wears a mini skirt.
decency and revealing clothes don't go together.

I agree that there are men who force their wives and daughters to wear the hijab. but this is not from ISLAM, it's from their strict tradition. Islam is against that. in Islam, a woman has the right to choose what to wear and shouldn't be forced. others don't have the right to judge her, God has.

dark-amon In reply to FullWhiteMoon [2010-05-19 21:19:18 +0000 UTC]

First about theskin. I'm male and I'm sexually healthy. In many peoples eyes that makes me a pervert as I do not hide that I can be sexually atracted to someone. Yet I do not react any differently grils in swimsuits and girls in skiwear or dresses (It may soun suprising but I'm completley serious). I guess some will say that I grew up in a soceity where such fashion is perfectly normal, but dosen't that go against the statement that clothes protect women from perverts if a soceity that reveals the human body removes sexual tension from the sin?
About the judge. If I where to stand in court and answer to a female judge I don't think I'd give a dime about her clothing as it is her posisiton and authority I would be respecting.
As for the part about Islam not forcing hijab through males you are correct. It is human beings that commit the injustice of using force on humans. But it's an bi-product of Islam (By bi-product I mean a negative result of strong personal, religious belief.) I demand that muslims take responsebilety for thes bi-rpoducts the same way as I demand that christians take responsebilety for the inqistion and the lingering homophobia that's still a problem in Europe and USA. NOTE: It's not the religions fault, but it's strengthens the means to such injustice.

We muslims believe that Satan is always there to tempt people to do evil. if you think that you are indifferent to what girls wear, there are so many men who are not. as a proof, take most fashion magazines and fashion designers and you will notice they try to make some designs to show more skin. some are unpractical clothes but they still do them to please men's lust (at least eye lust)

as for the judge clothes, even if you say that it doesn't matter, notice there is no female judge wearing mini skirt. it's like a rule of clothes (a man can't go to judge with a T-shirt either) the appearance has a big influence on people.even if you say it doesn't matter. in real life, if a man faces such a judge I doubt he/she will relax to answer well.

religions are always used by men to justify what they do. Islam is the same. some people don't understand it well and they try to use it in a wrong way to justify they are right. we shouldn't take these people as examples of good muslims. the same goes for others. we can't judge all christianity for what the pope and some christian priests do. right?

here, in this series of Islam for dummies, I am merely trying to focus on some basics of Islam and try to correct some misconception that so many people have mainly because of lack of correct knowledge.

Well, to rap this up before it becomes a religious debate (those seems to rarely end well) I just want to state that it seems weird to put so much of the responsebilety of sexual pressure on clotthes rather than the individuals themselves (like in Iran when a man walked free of charge of a rape because he stated that he was sexually hypnotized by the victims hair :S).
But you do make a solid point about the justification through religion, the people who do that are rarely good religious followers, or good people for that matter.

FullWhiteMoon In reply to dark-amon [2010-05-20 12:21:16 +0000 UTC]

it's not weird at all to put some responsability on clothing. choosing clothes is one side of life. and it affects how people see you and how they feel about you. and Islam gives this it's right importance by asking people to look modest.

the word hijab itself is not limited to the clothes. it includes the behavior and other sides.

as for your example of Iran, I hadn't been to Iran so I can't say if it's true or not. I don't like to believe all what the media say.

This is actually very informative, I think I understand this a lot better.

From the sounds of it Muslin women choose freely to wear this for good reasons. I just don't like how it is written, and that they are told by men that they must wear it.
It's sort of like telling someone they should wear a coat when it's raining, even though they were going to wear the coat anyway.
It gives the illusion of a lack of free will. I understand why Muslim women choose to cover themselves now, but it's a shame that many people don't understand. But I still think women should not be ordered to do so :<

I kind of wish that the rest of the world would be more like that. I hate how women dress, it makes me sad.
I wouldn't want to wear a hijab myself as it isn't in my culture, religion or personal preference, but I respect your decision to wear one. It makes a lot of sense.
I wear a T-shirt, trousers and a jacket all the time, and barely any make-up at all (just some to cover up spots). I feel comfortable with myself and I don't really enjoy wearing revealing clothing at all.
I can definitely empathise with the reasons behind why someone would want to wear a hijab. I don't like people looking at me and judging me :<

FullWhiteMoon In reply to seasonaldragon1 [2010-05-16 12:38:54 +0000 UTC]

that's right. nobody has right to judge you. they can give advices but no judgements. in Islam we believe that the only one who will judge people is God. if a woman wants to wear the hijab and she is convinced. that's good. if she doesn't want to wear it. it's her choice. we can't say she is bad or anything. it's just that she is not convinced or has her own reasons. in the end she will face her God, and he will choose to forgive or not.

unfortunately, so many non-muslims make the mistake to think that all muslim women are oppressed. to tell the truth, there is oppression everywhere. not just among muslims. and the oppression doesn't come from the religion but from the education of people. when someone is ignorant, he/she won't understand the truth...

lol, I talk much...

why is it that we can't show our arms? there is nothing much attractive about an arm, Im not talking abou wearing a tang-top or something but just a T-shirt or short sleeved shirt/blouse. I was just wondering

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FullWhiteMoon In reply to razgaz [2010-05-10 23:12:47 +0000 UTC]

in Islam a woman is only allowed to show face and hands. others parts are not allowed to be shown to men. if a woman wants to wear a T-shirt, she is absolutely free. nobody has the right to judge her. but in the day of judgement, she has to prepare a good excuse when God will ask her why she didn't follow his command.
muslim women wear hijab for so many reasons. the first one is because it is God's command. he ordered so.

I hope this answers your question.

intellegence protect more than a hijab... if a woman let a lustering man reach herself or not belongs to her and if she want to be cheap or not. But even in muslim countrys where woman wear hijab they are seen as less worthy by mans and mans think they stand over them...the Quran says its allowed to punsh a woman. And this is protection???!!!! Welcome in the 21.century

FullWhiteMoon In reply to CountessEsther [2010-03-24 23:12:10 +0000 UTC]

"intellegence protect more than a hijab" based on your logic, the west has more stupid women, since rape rate and molestation are the highest in the world and women there are not able to protect themselves using "their" intelligence.

I think that you didn't read the part where I wrote that Hijab is not just clothing but it's also related to moral values and modesty... please read all before you comment.

"the Quran says its allowed to punsh a woman"!!!! the Qur'an states clearly that the woman has to be treated kindly and the prophet -peace be upon him- said that the best of men are those who are kind to their wives.
we, muslims, appreciate if you don't explain the Qur'an as you please. there are books made by some famous scholars and they explain the Qur'an well. such as Ibn Katheer. and no one said that it's allowed to punch the woman. but if you go and read the explanation made by ignorant Islam haters, then you will certainly not understand and be wrong.

I know muslim people who live in muslim countrys, so its not that i dont accept the religion itself. I just dont accept the things which come from a book which is written from people and not from god and people spoil it with lies.

Sure we have much stupid chicks...i admit this totaly. But in many cases muslim woman get raped in there relationships and nobody cares. So i think the rape rate is the same just not officaly. And if a man really want to rape a woman i think a hijab cant stop him. And i dont said this because i just think it is written in Quran, i said it because i read and i saw the passage where this is written word for word. And theres nothing to missunderstand. Even we have more crimes muslim people have more suffering under traditions...just to say arranged marriages (i know a case and it ends sad). Politics and religion is to much mixed and this are not my words, this are the words from people who live in such countrys. So the basic Idea of islam is good for sure...but the way people live it out have a few questionable things for me.

"I just dont accept the things which come from a book which is written from people and not from god" well, this is something you need to prove first. until now, nobody could prove the Qur'an is written by a person. there are so many mysteries in the book and so many miracles. a man couldn't know them in that age... but this is a long topic... if you like to read in this topic, have a look at this website: [link]

"And if a man really want to rape a woman i think a hijab cant stop him." Hijab is not a shield. please read what I wrote about Hijab before you make conclusions.

"And i dont said this because i just think it is written in Quran, i said it because i read and i saw the passage where this is written word for word." here, I want to ask you a question: did you know that some verses in the qur'an have been wrongly translated into English and some have deep meaning that's lost in translation and some can't be understood by someone who doesn't know details of Islam as a whole? some have historical context. take them alone while ignoring the reasons and the time they were revealed in and you will get an out-of-context meaning. the books that explain the Qur'an are not made for nothing and muslim scholars are not there just for decoration. and the Qur'an is not like elementary school books that everybody can understand it easily.

This website has the book of explanation of the meanings of the Qur'an. [link] it's written by a famous person called Ibn Katheer and so many muslims use the book to understand the Qur'an. if you find a suspicious Quranic verse in some websites, feel free to check it in this book of explanation of the Qur'an before you judge or make your opinion.

as for the verse you mentioned. please have a look at this webpage. a non muslim asked the same question and a muslim scholar replied him:
