yes. you are absolutely right. if christians and muslims sit and think about what is common between them, they will really be surprised to notice that what unites them is much bigger than what makes them different.

why anti-muslims like to take the Quranic verses out of context? this verse comes with the 6th verse together. but you take this one and leave the other! why?
here are the verses together:
9:5-6 "But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, an seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. If one amongst the Pagans ask thee for asylum, grant it to him, so that he may hear the word of Allah. and then escort him to where he can be secure. That is because they are men without knowledge."
This verse was revealed towards the end of the revelation period and relates to a limited context
only by studying the story of the beginning of Islam you will understand the meaning and context of this verse.
first, the Pagans mentioned here are only the pagans of Mecca, who caused much hostilities toward the first muslims by persecuting them, torturing them, killing them, kicking them out of Mecca. and when the muslims started living peacefully in Medina, the pagans of Mecca launched war against them. and when they made peace later, the pagans of Mecca broke the peace. then this verse came.
We know that America was once at war with Vietnam. Suppose the President of America or the General of the American Army told the American soldiers during the war: βWherever you find the Vietnamese, kill themβ. Today if I say that the American President said, βWherever you find Vietnamese, kill themβ without giving the context, I will make him sound like a butcher. But if I quote him in context, that he said it during a war, it will sound very logical, as he was trying to boost the morale of the American soldiers during the war. ...Similarly in Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 5 the Qurβan says, βKill the Mushriqs (pagans) where ever you find themβ, during a battle to boost the morale of the Muslim soldiers. What the Qurβan is telling Muslim soldiers is, donβt be afraid during battle; wherever you find the enemies kill them.

This is really great it's in a form of a comic which makes me want to read it and is also teaching me a lesson about where the word originates. Even though I am Muslim, I still lack the ability to understand arabic, and I never thought to ask what Jihad had meant mainly because the media had described it as such of Holy War.

The term crusade I suppose has suffered a similar "demonization" as jihad. Crusade simply means to put forth exceptional effort to a cause you feel is worthy, similar to your explanation of jihad, and like jihad, events in history have instead caused them to be associated with "holy war".
Life is funny that way.

Ah this was quite informational! This misunderstanding is quite prevalent here in the US. I do wish people would just take the time to try and understand each others beliefs so we can prevent these kinds of misunderstandings.

I love your little For Dummies things! Since 9-11 we really only hear negative things about Islam in the West so I know very little of it and, since I'm not really into any religion myself, I love learning about any and all religions.
I have to ask, though, if violence is abhorred, why are the radicals, so, well, radical? The "terrorists", that is? Are they simply going too far with their Jihad to call other to their God? All we're ever told is that they think we're the "big devil" and that we must either convert or be destroyed.
I'd love some insight into why they think what they're doing is okay if fighting isn't something they stand for.
Also: Please understand I'm not trying to be racist or rude or start a fight, this is a legit question as I'm unaware of the answer and, rather than look it up or ask a parent or teacher whose views are also tainted, I'd like "to hear it from the horse's mouth", as it where. If you're unclear of the answer, that's fine too!

first, I'd like to say that's a very good question.
you have to know that in every people there are the good ones and the bad ones. and there are also those who use religion to justify their purpose and goals. those people play with others' ignorance. we should never take religious teaching from these people.
In Islam, religion should never be forced on anyone. simply because God won't accept you into Islam if you are forced to convert. second, life is very precious in Islam. he who kills an innocent soul is like killing all mankind and he who saves a soul is like saving all mankind. even during war, killing innocent citizens is forbidden in Islam. BUT muslim's duty is to explain Islam to non-muslims and let them understand it. if they want to follow it or not, it's their choice. all we have to do is just inform them. we shouldn't force them or oppress them and certainly we shouldn't kill them.
there are so many people who hate Islam (for religious or political reasons) and they want to show an evil picture of us and try to redefine our religion in a wrong way and then spread it among those who don't know Islam to fool them. their purpose is to justify attacking us and other political purposes.
someone has to be very careful from where he/she is learning about Islam because those people made websites and books to spread lies about us. among these lies is the holy war and definition of Jihad. they want to make it sound like we are barbaric and bloody savage people who live in the desert, ride camels and carry swords. it's funny, I had never touched a camel or a sword in my life. lol
If you want to know anything about Islam, the best way is to ask an open-minded muslim (you know, there are some muslims who are a little strict)

Suger coat the issue all you want, but if it's the act against injustice and striving to be closer to God, why did 55 people die in the 7/7 London bombings? That wasn't justice.

well, it's a big mistake to call Jihad any bombing that happens here or there in the world. so many people use the word Jihad to confuse those who don't understand its real meaning. either they do it on purpose or not. if someone wants to understand the truth, he/she has to go check the roots.
this short comic doesn't just represent my opinion. it's a simplified way to explain the real meaning of Jihad in Islam. take any trustful book about Islam and you will see the same thing.
