Hi everyone! It took a while but I finally have revamped the entire main cast of Downheart! I had a lot of fun coming up with ideas for this au and I appreciate all the support you guys are giving it, so thank you.

For those who are new, Downheart is my interpretation on what the underground would be like if the monsters were to lose hope in ever getting out and become sad basically lol. While this does take inspiration from a couple of elements from Negatale, I feel that it has evolved into its own thing the more I progressed with the revamped cast.

Furthermore, Downheart's Mt. Ebott is not only home to the monsters, but a mysterious negative energy that can damage their mental health immensely, and make them see hallucinations and nightmares of bad stuff. Normally, this energy would target those who already had mental health problems.

It didn't become a collateral issue until Chara arrived, where they truly suffered from the negative energy to the point where they wanted to commit suicide. But before they did that, they wanted to help the monsters in some way before they were gone, with Chara and Asriel doing the plan thing, which failed. Thanks to the negative energy being combined with the negative energy, it spreaded a terrain of sorts that affected all of the monsters in one way or another.

Frisk - A bright and go lucky human that has been met with an unlucky fate. They were out with their family on their way to a picnic when they got lost and soon stumbled into the underground. Now encountering these monsters that have lost their hope long ago, how they end their suffering is up to you.

Flowey - With Asriel's dust, negative energy, and some determination, this flower-like creature was born. With the negative energy twisting their personality, Flowey tends to prolong other's suffering for their own amusement, either doing so physically or mentally. Killing would only end the fun quicker. This is why he decided not to kill Frisk outright when they first meet. However, Flowey does have another plan in mind other than toying with Frisk's mentality.

Napstablook - After Mettaton left to attempt to chase his dream of being a star, things have been going downhill for Napstablook. The snails in their snail farm have died off and his loneliness and anxiety started to really get to him. Feeling that nobody wishes for him to be around, he attempts to commit suicide....only to fail to do so due to them being a ghost. Thus, Napstablook could be seen around the underground, eternally crying about their lonely life.

Toriel - Toriel fled to the old crumbled ruins, having a bitter hatred of Asgore for following the plan of killing any human that is spotted in the underground for their soul. As she would get adjusted to her life in the ruins, the first five humans would fall into the underground. She would guide them, teach them how to survive in the harsh underground, bake them pies and give them an option to stay, etc. However, she would notice those humans wouldn't be seen again once they step foot out of the ruins doors and soon learn what happened with some of the monsters that still wander into the ruins.

So when the sixth human came around, she would do her best to make sure they stayed away from the dangers that were present and keep them with her as long as she needed to, paranoid for what could happen to them. So, when the human tried to leave the ruins, she confronted them and tried to convince them to stay. The human was stubborn, so Toriel wanted them to prove their will to survive. But, after she launched her final attack out of anger, little did she know that she froze the human solid, killing them. Toriel grew terrified of what she did, realizing that she did the very thing she despised Asgore for.

After that day, she became overwhelmed with guilt, believing she is no better than her husband, and paranoid of the thought of accidentally doing it again. As Frisk enters the ruins, she will do her best to avoid them as much as she can. After all, she is part of the danger down here.

Sans - A rather antisocial skeleton that has been suffering from clinical depression. With a strange wave of negative energy hitting the underground after Chara's death, Sans was one of the monsters that fell victim to that negativity, feeling as if their choices and actions don't matter in this world. Think Sans's depression in Undertale but more noticeable and to an even worse degree. Tends to be a downer most of the time.

His magic is tied to his emotions, using more of it the stronger his feelings get. Although, this magic also uses up his energy, so he rarely uses it unless he really needs to.

Papyrus - After being rejected to be in the Royal Guard by Undyne, Papyrus's self confidence and confidence in general had broken completely. He now thinks very little of himself while having doubts in his capabilities. However, that rejection didn't stop him from trying to get into the guard in some way. He figured that if he were to capture a human, then Undyne would HAVE to let him into the royal guard! So, he built himself some armor using some cheap equipment from the nearby shop and now patrols Snowdin Forest in case any human manages to arrive . Overtime, he has grown less and less hopeful that he will actually find and capture a human but Papyrus isn't one to give up that easily....right?

He has also occasionally taken some temporary part time jobs in order to gain some gold in order to pay for his and his brother's needs.

Undyne - With Gerson's death along with the critical decrease of hope in the underground, Undyne has gone through vigorous and hard training to meet her standards of being the Royal Guard Captain to bring back hope to the Underground. When a human is present, she will push her body to its very limits to retrieve their soul. Especially now that Papyrus doesn't meet with her much anymore along with the sudden disappearance of Alphys, her job has become very stressful and tiring for her, but Undyne isn't going to give up on that "undying hope" she has that easily....but that doesn't mean she doesn't feel guilty for turning Papyrus away and not being able to protect Alphys.

Undyne is also the biggest monster in the underground, being based on a Megalodon instead of a standard piranha.

Alphys - Ever since the failure of the determination project, along with several cases of trying to fix it, Alphys has shut herself away from the underground, locking herself in her lab. The guilt of the project results and what she had done got to her, along with the paranoia of what people may think of her when the other monsters find out. Now she can be seen either watching one of her animes, sleeping, or just contemplating about her life and how she got to this point.

Alphys gave herself a robotic arm to replace the one that was blown off in one of her experiences and has made the visor to help her with social interactions in case she talked to people other than Mettaton.

Mettaton - Mettaton has yet to make a public appearance show wise since they've had a growing fear of what people would think of them. Along with the guilt of leaving their cousin sitting in, they've mostly just spent their days, taking care of Alphys and cleaning up any mess or trash that's been littered across the underground. Although, they still wonder what could've been if they were confident enough.

Mettaton will transform into their EX form ("Mettaton Starlight") once Frisk has given them the confidence to attempt their first performance, bringing out Metta's true colors.

Asgore - What once was a happy and hopeful king is now one filled with sadness and despair. Asgore has truly lost a lot due to Chara's happy accident. He lost his children, his wife, and the respect of his people due to not answering their concerns. He couldn't give his people false hope, or a true plan to get out of this desolate wasteland. The best he could do in the underground's current situation...is nothing. So, that's what he does, sitting on his throne, doing nothing but feeling sorrow of all that happened.

All of the new home has been covered in an eternal raging blizzard, with mist and snow covering the kingdom halls. None of yet have been able to cure his frozen heart.

Asriel - As the prince of the underground, Asriel does his best to meet their families standards, even if he isn't forced to do so. However, he wasn't really one to make friends, but that changed when he found a human as he was wandering the castle grounds. He took them in since he was concerned for their safety and begged their parents to have them stay with them. Toriel and Asgore agreed, and ever since then, the two have become good friends. He would comfort Chara when they would break down, give them some life advice, and overall, have fun with one another.

One day, he would be confronted by Chara, telling him about their plan. After some long convincing, Asriel hesitantly agreed and thus, the whole Chara death and absorbing soul commenced. As they were arriving at Chara's village, Chara took control and attempted to bring havoc to the village, taking revenge for everything they've done to them. Asriel would fight with Chara for control due to believing that revenge isn't right. This would leave them being retaliated against by the village folk, and have Asriel retreat to the underground, where he would die on the bed of flowers.

Chara - After living a terrible and traumatizing life on the surface. They would run away from the abusive orphanage they were placed in and commit suicide in a place where nobody would find them...MT.Ebott. But due to their determination, they survived the fall, where Asriel found them and took them in. As they were adjusting to the dreemurr family and the underground, they have been getting these sudden nightmares and hallucinations that have been breaking them down mentally. It got so bad to the point where they wanted to end their suffering by killing themselves. However, they wanted to help the underground in a way before they passed on.
