Description

Just for a minute...forget Marble Hornets. Forget Tribe Twelve. Forget all the Slenderman vlogs. Forget SLENDER. Forget whatever Slenderman artist you idolize. ESPECIALLY forget a certain uber-popular artist who calls herself "The Savior Of Slenderman." The ugly truth is that Slenderman does not have a concrete, written-in-stone canon. Aside from his basic attributes (tall, skinny, tendrils, claws, three-piece dark suit, no face, bald, kills/eats people, lives in the forest) his abilities depend upon the artist/writer. He doesn't necessarily have to be immortal, unkillable, unstoppable, etc. Don't just parrot what everyone else thinks he's like. Develop a headcanon of your own!

My version of Slendy, for instance, isn't immortal, just really hard to kill because of his regenerative abilities. And he's not TEH MOST POWERFUL THING IN TEH UNIVERSE and SUPER DUPER UNBEATABLE. My Slendy's sort of an anagalm of several different versions (uses Proxies, has blood and internal organs, isn't immortal, can regenerate, organic tendrils, only teleports when he really needs to, has a hidden mouth, etc.)
So stop whining about how he lost to Cannibal Jeff in this picture already. It's MY headcanon version of Slenderman, NOT yours. Besides, the picture takes place in a parallel universe.

PS: The blank-faced, bald, Proxy-using Slendy we're all familiar with was not what Slenderman was intended to be. As explained in one of my journals:

"Slender Man was originally intended:

-To have a face, nose, eyes, mouth and ears; not seen on camera, though.
-To also have short, white hair.
-NOT to be a Creepypasta, but rather a new horror character that would go mainstream.
-To hunt ADULTS and children, as compared to teens and college students.
-To NOT HAVE PROXIES!
-To do EVERYTHING by himself.
-To use garbage bags as his disposal.
-Not to have notes.
-To crack or snap people's necks, strangle, bite the head off, cut the victim in half with his claws or stab with his tentacles at a persons head or chest.
-To run, grab and throw.

But...
We have a non-scary re-hashing horror creature."

So the vision that comes into your head when you think of Slenderman isn't "canon" either.
PROBLEM, SLENDER-ELITISTS?

Slenderman (c) Victor-Surge/Something Awful

EDIT:I AM NOT TRASHING ANY SLENDERMAN SERIES. I'm just saying they're not canon and encouraging you to develop a headcanon of your own. You can still enjoy then, just don't take them as the gospel.

EDIT2: I got this info from in the comments.
"IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT MARBLE HORNETS: MH's producers stated about a month ago that the being we've all referred to as Slenderman in Marble Hornets is actually separate entity known as "The Operator", a being based on Slendy's appearance.
I REPEAT: Marble Hornet's Operator is not Slenderman."

The stuff I read when I first started to look up Slenderman indicated that his apparent facelessness was a combination of camera fail and everyone sees him differently.

My impression of him was that he's like a creepier modernized version of faeries taking children to protect them from the world, and if adults get in his way, he'll drive them mad, tear them apart, then burn down their house, and if someone managed to take a picture of him, he'll track them down too and do the same to them and anyone else who got hold of copies of the picture(s).

I haven't watched any of the vlog series, or played the game, so I don't care about such characters as Jeff, Rake, Masky, Hoodie, etc.
On the other hand, I am fond of the various "Slender-brothers" that have been invented along the way, but they, like the vlog characters, are still outside additions.

Yep. You oughta see the massive amount of hate I get for my semi-famous AU, the "Worm Jeff Saga", not because of the premise, the storyline, or anything else that would make sense, but because Worm Jeff "doesn't look like Jeff."

Honestly, I'm starting to think the real reason so many JtK fangirls hate Worm Jeff is because a six-inch-long, acid-drooling, brain-hijacking lizard creature can't be considered "bishie."

I agree with understand everything you're saying, but I feel like you're coming on a little strong. While it is true there is no mythos in which the Slender Man's appearance/abilities/motives are grounded, and while coming up with your own ideas is all well and good, I can't help but feel as though your sole intention for this post was to stir some obscure controversy and rustle jimmies.Β

Aside from that, your points are pretty valid. Good on you.

I've realized that pushing concepts of the Slender Man onto people is a lose/lose scenario, as it can deter them from a lot of what makes the character actually enjoyable, as well as prevent them from forming their own ideas.Β

I don't do fanart of anything myself (for various reasons) but if you're going to do it you might as well make it as original as possible and just use some elements as a backboard, right? I'm loving this anti-elitism and disregard for obscure canonical tip-toeing, but don't even get me started on unnecessary romance between characters...

In my headcanon, he doesn't eat people. I mean seriously, monsters eating people is just so bland, cliche, and generic.

In my personal headcanon, he sticks their bodies someplace where an unfortunate hiker or someone else may stumble upon it. Completley contrary to what is accepted as "canon", but I don't give a fuck. Because as you said, he has no official canon.

Mimi-Sardinia In reply to ErinElectricity17 [2013-09-30 13:33:01 +0000 UTC]

Technically "cannon" - with two Ns - is a large weapon that propels projectiles long distances.

"Canon" - with one N - means "official source material" or alternatively, "gospel truth".

It was originally used to refer to what is written in the Bible, then got adopted by early fandom-like clubs like Sherlock Holmes fans to refer to the original material written by ACD (presumably as opposed to SH stuff written by other writers).

Modern Fandom uses it to refer to what is in the original book/show/movie/play/game etc.

Then in some fandoms it can get divided down into the different official sources when there's more than one, like if a well-known book has a movie made based on it, some people may like "Book Canon" better, and some like "Movie Canon" better.

As far as I can see, Slenderman has Surge Canon (what Victor Surge originally posted), Marble Hornets canon, Tribe Twelve, Everyman HYBRID, Slender game... All of them are different and not a single homogeneous concept.

The-Metal-Maniac In reply to ??? [2013-09-29 20:03:48 +0000 UTC]

Hold on a second Fur. There's actually two schools of thought on Slenderman mythos.Β

First you have the self-described Surgists, who regard the original mythos for Slender Man/Slenderman (ONLY hunts children, no proxies, does everything himself, brutally violent/aggressive, possibly has cults worshiping him, you see him you're already dead, etc.) as gospel truth. Surgists see MH and other slenderblogs as corrupting the true mythos of mister tall, pale and faceless. [No idea whether or not Victor-Surge supports their views or not.]Β

Then you have the contemporary mythos that most of us, which MH has major influence (if unintended) over. Think proxies, video/audio distortion, passive-aggressive stalking, a lot of that sort of thing.

Other than that, like you've stated, there's not much on whether or not Slender man's immortal (although based the whole "antique German woodcuts" thing that was on SA, odds are he's probably supposed to be several centuries old at the very least). Everything else is pretty much an "eye of the beholder" deal.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT MARBLE HORNETS: MH's producers stated about a month ago that the being we've all referred to as Slenderman in Marble Hornets is actually separate entity known as "The Operator", a being based on Slendy's appearance.

I REPEAT: Marble Hornet's Operator is not Slenderman.

It's cool that you want to remind everyone about his very vague origins, but try to educate instead of discouraging! Redirect people to the SA thread to see for themselves what Slenderman is meant to be (or more correctly, that he can be anything), instead of telling them what you think it is or discouraging them for enjoying the opinions of various series.
The thread of SomethingAwful that Slenderman was born on: tinyurl.com/yzv23c8
Victor Surge posts Slenderman for the first time about halfway down the third page, if I remember right.

For Me Slenderman is Ageless. I also don't care what he intended to be...he isn't that. He is what he is now. I really hate it when people do stuff like this. WHO FRICKIN CARES! FULL RESPECT.

I am making a comic though on him (first # of pages are up/still in progress for more).

And in my comic, I go by what I think he should be, in my one created style:

In my story, he DOES have a mouth and tongue.

He does KILL ADULTS AND CHILDREN (mainly the story is about hunting this adult in the person's POV)

For his "victim of choice" (kind of like a "oh I'm totally gonna fuck that one up more than anyone else"), he drives them to the edge of insanity (ex: haunts, shadows, nightmares, hallucinations, etc./kind of like a "demon")

His "victim of choice" he consumes their mind, making them soulless, zombie-like, alternate personality, etc. which makes him more powerful. The stronger the mind, the stronger the energy to keep him "alive".

Regular victims, he brutally devours/eats them, leaving some of their corpse behind to frighten others as a sign of threat.

He can make his past victims be "visible" to other victims (mostly to "victim of choice"), like a ghost, but when they appear, they appear to be looking like they were partly eaten.

And I think there is a bit more BUT thats pretty much the main stuff.

I try to make him look and feel like a very haunting, murderous "demon", because Slenderman to me is extremely frightening when I picture him in my imagination.

Yet all these descriptions I said are all on what ONLY I think of what he should be.Β

Anyone else who throws there stuff saying "Oh he shouldn't be like that" I just don't listen because I want to do what I want to do. Its my story. You don't like it, GTFO. LOL

Thats just me though.

Thanks for this stamp and I applause the description

(sorry its so long lol)
