You can sketch with charcoal. Soft vine charcoal is perfect for that, and is extremely forgiving. You can lay in down on your paper and wipe it away without leaving any marks. It's good for building a loose base to build your hard charcoals up with. Also, using a chamois cloth is especially helpful when working with charcoal. It just wipes it away instead of marking up your paper with a bunch of eraser marks and is good for toning paper with charcoal so you get an even coverage.
