The man sat lost in thought as he read an unbound book. That's just how he likes to read. Even if in this world of automatons and machines, reading was a pointless endeavor.
After all, there were machines that could speed-read books in a matter of seconds, and could analyze and summarize their contents with ease. And there were machines that could do anything that a human could do, and more.
But he still reads, for there was a magic to the written word that machines could never replicate. He loved the feel of the paper beneath his fingers, the smell of the ink on the page, and the way that a good story could transport him to another world.

And it's free. He remembered a quote etched into the ancient library building in town: "Books alone are free and liberal. They give to all who ask. They emancipate all who serve them faithfully."
And so, as the train rattled along, the man continued to read, whilst also lost in a world of words and imagination, and trying to figure out what that quote truly means. He knew that he was a relic in this new age of machines, but he didn't care. He knew that there must still a place for humans in this world, even if it was a small one.
