Description
I've been working on this for a week. I've spent about... 12 hours total on it now? I really tried my hardest on this one. Well, almost. I see errors, but I'm so exhausted that I'll leave them alone for now. If anyone wants to help catch more errors though, please feel free. :3This is for my concentration for my art portfolio. My theme is nature, but each piece also has some emotion I'm trying to get across. fuzzball288.deviantart.com/art⦠and fuzzball288.deviantart.com/art⦠are also for this. I need to do 12 eventually, so I don't think I'll put this much effort into them anymore
This was inspired by the gulls that fly around outside my school. They seem so happy and free while I'm stuck stressing over homework and tests. I can't wait for summer..

Thank you! This is my first time getting a critique so I'm not quite sure how to go about responding. I'm glad that I was able to convey the emotion correctly. You essentially got what I was thinking when I painted this.

Excellent! Well, that's all there is to responding to critique- a response is a response and very much appreciated!

I really like the composition and angle. The only thing I could suggest you to improve the painting would be to increase the contrast a bit in the dark/light areas. The bird is seen against the sun so the shadows should be darker.
Very good job overall.

I live in New Jersey half the time x33
When you're out on the streets it isn't that pretty, but out on the beach...
And the boardwalk is quite pretty at night in the summer.

Yeah! The ocean is always very pretty I think, unless there's garbage floating or something.

I love gulls, and I know what you mean about seeing them flying free while you're stuck. We have the same gulls at our school. This is such an enchanting picture, and I can't find anything wrong with it for the life of me. Wow.

It was well earned. We all want wings.

Yechezkel [2009-02-01 04:43:47 +0000 UTC]
Well, the devil's always in the details, isn't it? The wings are scaled and shaped differently to a degree that can't quite be explained by depth perception, the background just seems tacked on next to the level of detail established by the birds in the foreground. The birds besides the main one seem unnaturally bendy. And in the spirit of honesty? I just fucking hate seagulls.
But obviously I like it, so what's good about this piece? What it lacks in technicals it makes up for in spirit and emotion. A lot of work clearly went into this, and the subtle shading and visible strokes invoke the lofty thoughts that flying birds ought to. So while taking more time for agonising details would have made it better, strictly speaking, I feel like it would have lost the intangible something that makes it art. Put this much effort into everything from now on.

If I put as much detail into the background as the foreground, it wouldn't be the background would it? And yeah, the two bottom right gulls are retarded, especially the larger one. I had some trouble finding refs at the same angles as I wanted so I improvised.
Thank you. :3 And no way, I'm never trying this hard again. I gave up krat for this.

aww love this! &I COMPLETELY agree with you btw (about school & everything, HS sucks, just a little)
*FAVS* & is now my desktop, just to let you know.
But just out of curiosity, are you on the west coast or east coast? Like Cali or something? How you said how you're able to "see gulls flying outside at SCHOOL" just sounds so pretty and amazing and inspiring...if only we lived by the ocean =]

Thank you, I'm honored
I'm on the east coast, in New Jersey. The gulls all move in to parking lots and such in the winter since it's warmer away from the ocean I guess. I'm about an hour's drive from the beach.

Aw, I'm honored that you're honored. ^^ I love your artwork & I see you're a fellow pokemon fan (right on!)
Oh wow, NJ eh? I never really saw NJ as a place to be described as "pretty" really, but now I'm having second thoughts. Time for a road trip! haha. What part of NJ are all the pretty gulls at exactly? like which city?

Sorry I didn't reply sooner, I've been busy. XD;
Thank you! I always go to Ocean City. The beaches there are pretty nice, and I've seen a variety of gulls there, plus pelicans and dolphins.

A great example of Link's Awakening fanart. But you can't really tell at first. You should have Koholint Island in the background.
I mean, really. It just looks like some birds otherwise.

Oh geez. Now you've jumped onto the "make Tama feel like the worst artist ever" bandwagon, too >.>"
HAHAHAHA CRIT
The wings are different shapes on that main bird, and the bird to the bottom right of its tail right wing is curving far too steeply towards the bottom of the picture from the position it's in. That's really all I can catch; I'm no expert on bird anatomy >.>"

fuzzball288 In reply to miss-tama [2009-01-29 20:50:26 +0000 UTC]
You should feel inspired to do better than me :3
And thank you! The main bird's wings are at different angles so that's why the left one bends more sharply, but I think you're right about the other bird.
