Description
Titled after one of my favorite piano songs out there, "Beneath the Ashes", a Lava Reef Zone Act 1 remix. This YouTube version should still be good:[link]
Volcarona Pokedex entry:
When volcanic ash darkened the atmosphere, it is said that Volcarona's fire provided a replacement for the sun.
Contest (#43) entry for , the theme being "Pokedex Entries."
I actually managed first place with this piece, thanks everyone who voted. Its been many years since I won anything. ^_^
Done in Prismacolor pencils on black card stock paper.
I feel like this is my first REAL picture in a long, long time. And hey, these days I'm remembering to sign my pictures for a change. =3

White is a person's best friend when coloring glows on black paper.

Damn does this piece pack some punch! From the thumbnail it almost looks like it's going to be horror or suspense themed. Instead, the whole idea is that Volcarona is a beacon in the darkness. It's kind of awesome, actually.

Ah, I was kinda hoping for the feeling. Its just, Volcarona comes across as such a tough guy, you can't help but feel a little threatened from a light in the darkness. =3
Thanks. ^^

wow this is beautifully done <3 I thought you used pastels at first, and you nailed the glowing effect!

That technically almost happened actually. I learned that it is possible to get slightly brighter whites on non-white paper if you layer white oil pastels over white/lighter Prismacolor pencils. And I played around quite a bit with several medias and it was only Prismacolor pencils combined with oil pastels that produced noticeably positive results.
I had intended on doing that when I started this, but it seems it ended up alright after all. =3

oh that sounds really cool :3 I didn't know you can do that with oil pastels I only work with chalk pastels

I was a tad surprised to. But again, I could only get it to work with Prismacolor pencils because of their waxy nature. I don't know of any other pencil brands off hand that use similar materials. o.o

This is awesome! I had to sit here and stare at it for a while before being able to form words! The lighting is definitely the most striking thing about this. You've always had a knack for contrast and shading, but this piece in particular is astounding that way. Volcarona's wings really look like they are giving off heat, not just light, showing off its fire-typing and Pokedex entry beautifully. I'm really impressed by the way you even properly showed the light affecting the ash particles at various positions relative to Volcarona. The purple gleam of its eyes and abdomen offer a nice touch of color contrast to match the value contrasts dominating the rest of the piece, too. Most appealing to the eye! And I'm glad you added Espeon there. It shows off your fur-drawing skills subtly but nicely, and Espeon's slack-jawed posture is pretty appropriate for the impressive spectacle above it. Rounds out the composition well, too.
I shut up and fav now. X3 Best of luck in the contest! I'll be voting for you!

Awesome comment Peachiekee! I had to sit here and think for a while of something nice to say back! You made it feel all worth making. I'm glad you noticed in why I chose purple colors. =3 I wasn't sure how well that would be picked up on.
Why do I feel stereotypically inclined to think you of all people would know what ash fall looks like?
I have strong reason to believe I will revisit this ash fall concept.
For some reason this whole idea came to mind while searching for new young adult books last month to put on out bookstore shelves. One caught my eye by the title "Ashfall" I think it was and is supposed to be about a teen's survival in a post-Yellowstone world as it unfolds.

My pleasure. Keep up the great work.
As we were discussing, I do live in a volcano range. Let's hope it stays dormant, eh?

Thanks Tenko. The lights in this might be acting a tad overexposed from the scan, even though I didn't touch the lights at all in the photo editing. =3

There are no words to adequately describe this.
But 'pure awesome' gets pretty damn close.
