Description So, this one...

Two days ago, I plunged headfirst into a really big confidence funk. It wasn't really over anything in particular, they just kind of come and go for me: I was drawing in between classes, started having a bit of trouble making things work in Photoshop, and soon my head was filled with terribly negative thoughts about my future as an artist and my ability to improve. It got so bad that I felt myself choking up in the middle of class, I'm embarrassed to admit. On the bus ride home I wracked my brain for something, anything, to pull me out of it, because I just couldn't take it anymore. I pulled up that journal that I posted a while back when I was in a similar situation, and when I found a comment left by MercuryJin which directed me to this drawing , a thought occurred to me that, while kind of silly on the offset, honestly got me to think: if the characters on my screen could speak to me as I drew them, what would they say? It didn't matter if I personally felt like total garbage, I just set all those feelings aside, tried to be honest with myself, and began drawing out my answers.

And... it helped. Like, really, really helped.

Despite everything, I just couldn't bring myself to imagine them being anything except supportive and encouraging. And how can I not trust my own drawings, the characters I've grown to know and love so, so much that I dedicate hours upon hours bringing them to life on paper or a screen? By the time I was finished, I honestly couldn't wait to draw again because I felt like I could take on the world; I'm still feeling giddy about it as I type this. If you ever find yourself in the same confidence funk, I'm not sure how well this method will work for you but it definitely worked for me, and I encourage you to at least try it.

There's some part of me that saying I should be embarrassed for doing this, but... honestly, I'm not. Not in the slightest. Maybe I should be on some level, but I love all of them too much to really care. And if it genuinely helps me, then really, does it even matter?

EDIT: Just to clarify, I'm not doing this to ask for attention or validation. Your words are appreciated, but that's NOT the reason I posted this. I wanted to share what I did to get the idea out there and hope it encourages others to do the same. I was actually kind of worried when I submitted this that it would be seen as conceited or self-gratifying so, please, do not misconstrue this as something it's not.

I hope you have fun! Trust me, it really helps!

Hey, I really know how you feel, wishing your artwork could be better right now instead of later, but trust me - as long as you keep practicing, listen to critique, draw inspiration from others, and aren't afraid to experiment, you'll be better before you know it! Just compare this drawing with the ones I've made recently - it's only about a year of difference!

Y'know something? Last year, I drew a Christmas comic starring Mettaton EX, whom I'd never drawn before except as a reference in my sketchbook. Β I had to draw and redraw him, with all the details and different expressions, no less than seven times.

And for the most part, I was pleased with how he and the comic came out.

That really helped with my confidence drawing this same bunch of characters.

Is it... is it alright if I take this concept and run with it? I still LOVE your work (and I'm still not lying!), but this just seems like the kind of thing that I could really use in times of trouble. Like right now, oddly enough... but enough of the present, what about the future?
Also, I don't know who I am in this! I'm kinda... I'm a bit of a Toriel, Papyrus and ASGORE person here... IDK BUT THIS IS STILL AWESOME.
EDIT: I'm more the second paragraph of Papyrus

Oh, of course you can! I strongly encourage you to! And it's okay if you feel like this isn't up to snuff - it is a fairly old drawing from back when I was first figuring out digital artwork, haha.

And the characters here aren't supposed to "be" anybody but themselves. This is what I imagined each character would say to me if they knew I was feeling down about my artwork.

AWESOME. I'll be rolling with this instantly... just have to get a new Word doc up cus I work with writing not drawings, hehe. This is definitely up to snuff! I'm actually glad I looked through your entire gallery. Your shopkeeper kids were SO CUTE... you just need to keep doing stuff like that, that'd put the greatest smile on that.

Yeah, that's true... I guess it's how I feel I am just in general. I haven't had the best wordchoicings lately, cus y'know... things have been things. I will also SERIOUSLY always be loving your work. So just seriously, KEEP IT UP!!!!

And the long comments are what I do for you, pal! If this goes through the line I will just have no words. I have no idea why but any Undertale character drawn as a little kid is too adorable to me. And really anything of yours is too cute, especially the piece you drew after the journal with you showing your face for the first time... it just screams dork to me, and in the best way possible. I usually use dork as a compliment. Also, that was a Fangamer shirt, wasn't it? I really want to get things from Fangamer.... too bad I'm still out of cash Β

Aw, thank you so much! I love it when people call me a dork in a complimentary way, it just feels really appropriate and makes me proud of myself, haha. And yes, I did get it from Fangamer, my sister bought it for me from their booth at the expo! And yes, with the release of the new plush toys, I'm feeling the pain of being broke all over again, haha.

Hey, I know I left ya a note, but I figured a comment here would be a little more permanent. Sorry it's late, but based on the note I sent you, you know I saw this fine piece of work of yours.

I always comment on how wonderful you are at showing emotional expressiveness, and this drawing is certainly no exception. Toriel and her loving, motherly look. Papyrus and his always-confident smile. Sans and his sure yet laid-back perpetual grin. Undyne and her proud, determined laugh. Alphys and her total geekiness (especially how you drew her squishing her cheeks all adorably... ). And the kindhearted Asgore, and his sage composure and warm heart. And all these heroes' responses are completely in-character and believable. Whatever put you in such a funk, you don't have to feel so lowly of yourself.

You ARE a good artist. No matter how much your inner demons may refuse to let you believe it, you are. You are learning, and every other artist you idolize was once where you are. And an artist's worst critics are not from without. They are from WITHIN. Just as Pyotr Illich Tchaikovsky DESPISED his Nutcracker ballet in spite of it becoming his most famous work, many artists are harder on themselves than their own audiences are. If you need prayer, just let me know. I'll keep you in my prayers anyway, but if there's anything specific you need, just note me.

Courage and Godspeed.

Oh gosh your comments are always so nice and supportive and detailed... gah, you're so awesome, thank you so much! Β

Being as in-character as possible was a huge part of this, since I wanted the answers to be as genuine as they could be. Honestly, the fact that they all turned out like did they did is a pretty great testament to why these characters are so beloved by the people who play their game, I think - due to a combination of great writing and insanely meta storytelling, not only do they all feel like completely real and believable people, but they feel like incredibly kind and supportive real and believable people, and all in their own unique ways.

This actually made me tear up a bit. ;v; This is so inspiring and sweet, and I know that you made this for yourself, but imagining these characters that I've come to love so much saying these things to me as well got me kind of emotional. I especially love the way Papyrus, Undyne, and Alphys are drawn here, Papyrus and Undyne with their big, toothy, confident, encouraging grins, and little flustered Alphys squishing her cheecks. X3

(Also, you got a comment from Jim on this and I'm screaming internally, omg. You deserve it, though; this picture really is amazing and I honestly wouldn't mind having it as a motivational poster. )

Were you seriously anxious about this??
Rebekah these are ADORABLE!!!

Not only are they perfectly in-character but they look wonderful!!
Look at that Papyrus oh my gosh! His smile is radiant!! I can't stop looking at him, he makes me so happy!!
And Alphys actually had me 'aww' out loud oh my god look at her squashing her cheeks

These are absolutely perfect. If there has ever been a cast of character more fitting for self-help and self-support art, it's the Undertale cast, because these characters, they genuinely become your friends in the game. They would support you and they WOULD say these things.
They ARE saying these things - right there on the picture!

And besides being great for your own encouragement, these are genuinely great for many young artists to see!Β These could be beautiful support images for many people, not just you! You've truly created something beautiful and empowering here and it even almost teared me up as well. <':

I am very glad you asked me to look at this. (:

Oh my gosh, Jim, you didn't need to leave anything here, you could have just replied to the note but THANK YOU!!! Oh my gosh you're such a nice and positive person holy crap..

I guess my biggest issue with it was that most motivational artwork is supposed to be non-specific in order to be helpful for everybody, and since Sans and Asgore are actually looking at themselves as I drew them, I was worried that effect would be mitigated and it would be seen as purely self-serving and not accessible for other people. I guess I was just overthinking it a little, hehe...

Seriously, though, thank you so so much for doing this, it really made me feel a lot better about the whole thing.
