Description Horse: Phoenix
Show: RNG Horse Show Challenges
Story:
Noah was relieved to finally be home again. In hindsight, choosing a multi-day event for his first show probably wasn't the best idea. Phoenix had behaved perfectly except for the saddle incident near the end of the event, and that was Noah's fault anyway. What they both needed was a good, long break from the stress of preforming in front of so many people. Noah had planned to spend the whole day with Phoenix but unfortunately, the universe had other plans.
His sister and her husband had to rush off to the hospital, something about a friend having a difficult pregnancy. Noah wasn't really listening. He desperately wracked his brain for an excuse not to go with them without seeming insensitive. That's how he ended up driving to his sister's place to pick of her kid, Aava.
Normally, he wouldn't mind having Aava over. She was incredibly calm for someone her age and easy to please. They usually spent all their time out in the pasture with Phoenix, or exploring the edges of his property line. Aava was one of those people that needed little to no input from someone else to keep a conversation going, and Noah was content to listen to her ramble about anything and everything. She had a natural instinct when it came to animals, changing her behavior to fit their needs. Growing up around horses, Aava knew a lot about how to handle them. Noah was slightly embarrassed at times, taking advice from a four-year-old, but sometimes testing out one of Aava's ideas was exactly what Phoenix and him needed. He really did enjoy having the kid around, but he had been looking forward to spending some quality time with his horse.
When he finally arrived, Aava was waiting for him on the front porch, swinging a toddler sized backpack around like a helicopter. Her face lit up when she saw him, leaping down the stairs two at a time to greet him. "You ready?" Noah asked, opening the passenger door and watching the child scramble into his truck. "Yup!" she chirped happily, legs dangling off the seat. Normally, Noah would've gotten her car seat out of her parents car, but they had left in such a hurry they probably forgot. It was a short drive on mostly backroads so he wasn't too worried. "Don't die, alright? Your parents WILL kill me." Aava giggled.
The toddler happily chattered the whole way home about her new preschool teacher and the new friend she had made during snack time. Once they arrived she had excitedly raced to the fence around Phoenix's pasture, easily slipping between the boards. Phoenix sniffed the air then nickered happily, trotting up to the small human and ruffling her hair.
"Momma found a show for you to enter!" She told the mare, bouncing with excitement. "I brought all the stuff we need, hang on, I'll go get it!" She announced, racing back to the truck to get her bag. Noah watched as she returned to his mare, dumping the contents of her bag on the ground in front of her. Phoenix sniffed the pile curiously and, deciding there was no threat, returned to grazing.
"Do you have a camera?" Noah jumped, not expecting the child to be standing right behind him. "No, but I can take a picture with my phone." he replied. Aava returned to what she was doing, pulling something black and furry from the pile. She allowed phoenix to sniff it, then proceeded to stick it to her nose. Phoenix wiggled her lip, puzzled by the new sensation. "What is that?" Noah asked, suddenly alarmed. "A mustache." Aava giggled, grabbing another fuzzy strip of hair from the pile. "And a beard."
"What does she need those for?"
"The picture"
"Why do you want a picture of her with facial hair?"
"For the show."
"What show?"
"The one Momma showed me"
Noah stared, flabbergasted. "You... know there's no show here, right?"
"Of course not, silly! You just take a picture and send it to them."
"I still don't see why she needs facial hair- is that a top hat?"
"It's a drag show! Phoenix is gonna be a drag king!"
"...you know what a drag queen is?"
"A drag KING! Not a drag QUEEN!"
"...okay..."
Noah watched as Aava reached into the pile again, pulling out a long, black ribbon. Phoenix froze. "Hang on Aava, Phoenix isn't very good with ropes-" but she was already wrapping it around her neck, tying it surprisingly quickly with her chubby toddler hands. Noah expected his horse to spook, to rear, to kick, anything but stand there frozen. Aava patted her neck. "It's okay, girl" She whispered, moving to the side so she'd have plenty of room to run if she spooked. After what seemed like an eternity to Noah, Phoenix lowered her head and began to graze again. Aava grabbed the last item from her bag, a black bowtie, and clipped it onto the ribbon. "Okay, you can take a picture now!"

Artist note: This took me like 30 minutes so I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I'm not sure I'll get anything for the show since its been open for so long, but I enjoyed making drag king Phoenix.
