Backstory:
Noah found Phoenix when he bought Blue Barn Pastures . She had been abandoned on the property and was in bad shape. She was severely emaciated and terrified of human contact. Her body was covered in scars from whips, spurs, and who knows what else. Vets and rescue groups advised euthanasia. Noah was used to working with dogs who were considered "hopeless" and wanted to give her a chance even though he had never worked with horses before.
Phoenix was so terrified of people she had to be tranquilized in order to receive the necessary vet care to keep her alive. Over time, Phoenix learned to tolerate Noah's presence and began accepting treats. Phoenix was the hardest case of abuse and neglect Noah had ever worked with and he was beginning to be discouraged by the lack of progress with her. He quit working as a full time canine behaviorist in order to spend more time with the mare. Now working as a part time dog trainer, his savings began to dry up.
As he continued to work with Phoenix, she began to trust him enough to allow him to touch her. With this breakthrough, Noah increased his efforts to introduce a halter, but this only seemed to push the mare away. Her feet were becoming overgrown again and if Noah couldn't get her to accept a halter, she would have to be sedated again in order to get her hooves trimmed. He feared that darting her would set back all of their progress. He tried having the farrier trim her without restraint, but the mare refused to go anywhere near the strange new person in her field.
Noah discovered that she would allow him to pick up her feet to clean them, and wondered if he could at least file them down a bit on his own. At first Phoenix was wary of the file but she soon realized that it caused her no pain and allowed Noah to use it. He began learning how to trim her feet and got better each time he did it. He started trimming his neighbor's and close friend's horses in order to make a bit of extra cash. Phoenix's vet taught him to administer all of her vaccinations so she wouldn't be put under more stress.
Noah was crushed that he no longer had the money to build the dog training facility he had dreamed of, but every little milestone he and Phoenix reached made it worth it. One day, Noah had the idea to try training Phoenix to do tricks in exchange for treats. She responded immediately and the two became very adept at liberty work. Phoenix was doing so well, in fact, that Noah wanted to enter her in a competition. There was just one problem. Phoenix was perfectly happy to be around Noah, but any other human sent her running for the hills.
Noah's niece, Aava, had been begging to come see the horse her uncle kept talking about. After months of begging and pleading, he reluctantly agreed. When Noah and Aava arrived at Phoenix's pasture, the mare, spotting her person, excitedly galloped over. Phoenix didn't notice Aava until she let out a laugh of delight at seeing the mare, spooking her and causing her to race away to the other side of the field. Noah explained that Phoenix's previous owners weren't very nice to her, and now she was afraid to trust new people. He suggested that they sit in the grass and wait for her to come to them. Aava showed surprising patience for someone so young, and sat quietly while they waited for the horse to calm down. Eventually, Phoenix cautiously walked up behind Aava, reaching down to sniff her.
Over the next few days Phoenix learned to trust the young girl. Noah was amazed by how quickly the mare adjusted and began inviting more people to come see her. Soon, Phoenix would happily greet anyone who came to the fence as long as Noah was nearby. Noah was thrilled by her accomplishments and began looking for shows to enter.
He knew it wasn't Phoenix's fault that he no longer had the funds to build his dream facility, after all, he had chosen to quit his job to work with her, but he couldn't help but resent her for it. He felt like she owed him for the time and money he had spent rehabilitating her, and wanted her to earn the money back through shows.
