My first entry in the #SKRATCHJAMS ! Finally got around to it. I hope I'll make my participation a regular thing.Concept: Superman (DC) redesign
Medium: .5 blue pencil | .3 mech pencil | sai | photoshop cs4
I'm not a fan a superman. Too goody goody soilder boy for my tastes. But I AM a fan of the 5oclock shadow having superman who killed Lex (implied) in that one DC game trailer.

a lovely redesign - I'm glad that someone else doesn't believe that spandex is required for an excellent superhero costume. Understated costumes, like this one, make much more of an impression I think. They make the characters more relatable, and in turn, make you take them more seriously. Especially an individual who can be so sugary as Superman can be.
The long coat adds a perfect touch of the dramatic which, I think, is required for a superhero of his caliber and command.
Wanted to get my thoughts out, very, very well done!!

I really like the whole Trench Coat approach. For me, the only thing that detracts away from the feel is the style of shirt. again that is from my point of view.

I have never seen a redesign of the classic Superman look that I have ever liked... until now. Awesome job.
There is a little too much red though I don't know that could be fixed without hurting the awesome impression this gives.

Too much red...? That's a matter of personal taste. It would be very cool and fun to see a "modern" design of your own though. The online event this was done for, didn't have many entries taking a "modern" route. It's be interesting to see more.

Also, one more thing. I love, LOVE the manner he's floating here. Very alien, very solid, and it gives him an air of incredible power. This is helped by his gaze, with those iridescent blue eyes that are just a LITTLE too bright to be human.

Coat's a little cliche, and could use maybe some black sleeves, or even sleeveless, so it's not so overwhelmingly red. And thus 80's looking.

About that...
I agree, the coat is a little cliche. Less so than the cape, and the imagery is nice. Besides, coats have these handy things we call "Pockets". I think the jeans and shirt offset the red nicely enough as is, personally.
Lastly, I feel Superman should always look either incredibly futuristic or kinda retro. Nothing about the character says "This is the man of our times." He has, previously, been displayed as the "Man of Tomorrow", the man we could be. Alternately, he is currently seen as the relic of a bygone age (which this scruffy and slightly more mature is good at emphasizing).
This outfit, I feel, is a perfect one for a Superman that IS aware of just how dated he is.

Capes are cliche as well, no? For a superhero, even more so. A coat, I say, is the lesser of the two evils.
Black sleeves or sleeveless...? Speaking from my personal taste and design sense: Completely black sleeves would throw the whole thing off, and Sleeveless MIGHT work, but only if his color palette was different. With the current palette, sleeveless would be unattractive (and actually make it 80's looking the most I think). And adding black (or some other colors to the coat) could definitely work if placed right, that's actually what I would of done naturally. But I choose to go all red to change things up for myself.
