Description Here's a panel/pin up from Mr. Grant issue 2. Can't say too much more about it, seeing as issue 1 hasn't even been released yet. I just wanted to practice making a more complicated page than normal, and see how quickly I could ink and color it. So far, I'm liking the results. Notice one of the other bots in my gallery is hanging out in the background!

Agreed with almost everyone *_* My goodness, this is so clean, but very detailed and [insert more flattery]. That is just... For it being so clean, and digital... Super class, my man. Super class.

Superb Inks. They follow the forms nicely, and yet they don't overpower the focus of the image. Digi-Inks or Traditional Inks? That is the question.

Word.

Digital. I haven't traditionally inked since finishing the first comic. I'm trying to see if I can move over to doing it all digitally, or if it takes more time than traditionally inking it.

Sorry for the slow reply.

Honestly, I can't remember how long the inks took. Somewhere in the range of 4-7 hours, I think. I kind of tend to noodle at a work a little at a time, so it spread out into several days.

That's cool. Did you approach the piece with the magic wand tool or some method entirely different? Digital inking is something that I've never really been able to find a good solid, tried-true method to. It makes sense that you would use a colored pencil for penciling, and then digitially ink that. Anyway...

Magic wand tool? You mean the one in Photoshop?

I was actually using Illustrator. Pretty straight-forward method. You need a Wacom for it, though. I wouldn't ever dare ink with a mouse. I just imported the pencils into Illustrator, used that as a template, and literally traced it on a new layer using the brush tool. I usually start zoomed out a bit, and get the major areas outlined, and then I move in and get more detailed. Then I'll create another layer where I zoom in super-close, and smooth out any wonky lines with white ink.

In terms of vector work, it's kinda messy, in that it contains all sorts of extra points and paths that you wouldn't normally want in a vector drawing, but it works great. It's definately smoother than the hand-inked drawings I've done, especially when blown up larger than normal.

Illustrator, check. Wacom, check.

Wow. Intense process. Sounds like it requires a lot of patience, but I can see how it would be supremely helpful. I might have to try this method (again). I say again, because I've drawn a few TFs and attempted to trace them in Illustrator. It's not nearly as easy as I'd like it to be.

Really neat to pick your brain on this process though. It's sorta like the Special Features on a DVD, you get to find out about all the magic. Hee hee. Any other tips for digi-inking for those aspiring to do so? Maybe something on the patience factor?

Heh! I'm now a DVD commentary.

Mmm.. the patience factor isn't really anything special. It's very easy for me to zone out doing these, and the time goes by really quick. If I start an ink, I can usally finish that part of the process in a day. If you don't feel like you have the patience for something, try working on it for a 1/2 hour.

Artists and athletes get can often get into a sort of hyper-concentration- a hypnotic state where they are so mentally focused that time goes by in a blink (like I described above). You can usually induce this state by giving yourself enough time to fall into the "flow". If you work on something for a 1/2 hour, you'll often fall into that type of concentration.

Sometimes, I just don't want to approach something- it seems like too monumental of a task to begin, but if I tell myself that I'll work on it for a 1/2 hour, I'll usually end up working on it for hours on end. If you're still frustrated after 1/2 hour, then move on for the day, and approach it later.

Useful? Can't think of any other inking advice off the top of my head. If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to answer them for ya.

That, my friend, was killer. I can see why you're so talented and accomplished. It's not just because you have phenomenal skills, but you also have the proper mental approach to tackle your art. This leads to the phenomenal work that we see.

Do you usually color in your blacks or use the "lil x" method? Or do you use a combo of both? I find that I should use the "x" method, but when I do so, I get lost a bit with my darks. And if I color them in with my pencils, then I usually have a dirty drawing which creates problems further down the piece's creation.
