Description
These are the Rex twins, Terrence and Matilda, from Prehistoric Park.(Some information may not be accurate to the source material. Also, spoilers.)
Among the first batch of Residents to arrive in the park, the twins have been there since the beginning, appearing in just about every episode up to the end.
Nigel discovered them as hatchlings after following their mother to her den, where she had brought a dead Ornithomimus to feed them. While it was a beautiful moment to watch a mother go out of her way to feed her young, it all came crashing down when a male Tyrannosaurus approached the nest and attacked them. Despite having been injured by a Triceratops and practically starving, the mother fought the male while Nigel and the Twins only watched in horror.
While the female put up a good fight, the male used her weight to slam the larger dinosaur into a jagged rock, causing her to suffer internal bleeding and ruptured internal organs. The twins only watched as the male proceeded to take the Ornithomimus corpse and leave their mother to die.
That, however, was the least of their worries. Nigel, as much as it hurt to admit, he knew couldn’t save the mother, who, despite having enough energy to snarl at him when he came close, could only lay and wait for death to claim her. With the meteor just seconds away, both twins knew they had to take cover, but refused to leave their mother’s side.
It was only when the meteor blast was upon them did they abandon her (with some coaxing from Nigel), the last memory being the image of her mother, the light slowly fading from her eyes, as eternity consumed her.
After being rescued and spending time in the park, the terrible ordeal that brought them there had faded into what could be described as a bad dream. Sadly, this didn’t mean their problems had faded completely...
Over the course of the series, one of the subplots was the increasing tensions between the two tyrannosaurs as they grew. These tensions led to fights that forced the park to put up a barrier down the middle of their inclosure. For a time, it worked.
Unfortunately, it failed to stop a full-scale fight from breaking out, as Matilda forced her way through the barrier, catching her brother off-guard and forcing him on the defensive. Being a female of her species, Matilda had a size and strength advantage, overpowering Terrence and nearly killing him. Even though the Head-Vet Suzanne did save Terrence, the attack gave him a scar on his face that served as a grim reminder of a Tyrant’s rage.
In the end, complete separation seemed like the only option, and thus, Nigel gave the word.
For the rest of the show, the twins didn’t have much of a role until the final episode, where a stowaway Troodon (Rascal) startled a member of the park’s Titanosaur herd, causing chaos as the multi-ton behemoth crashed through enclosure after enclosure. One these was Matilda’s, who proceeded to attack the closest place to her enclosure: The Elephant Plain’s.
While the adult elephants were too large for the adolescent tyrannosaur, the Matriarch’s calf was fair game. Matilda would’ve killed the calf too if Martha, the resident Wooly Mammoth, hadn’t stepped in and distracted her long enough to allow the calf to escape.
Eventually, Matilda was recaptured after the breakout was contained. And thus, peace was restored. Or so everyone
In DAPPA, the Twins return in the second book: “Dinosaur: Extinction Lasts Forever”. Sometime between returning to the present and the events of the second book, Nigel had upgraded Hazel’s translator to translate the grunts and roars of carnivores. This is where characters like Terrence and Matilda come in.
Sage depicts the Rex Twins like teenagers in a “realistic” fashion, and by realistic fashion, I mean not acting their age. They also don’t remember their mother, though they do know that’s she passed away. Their character arc in the book consists of them trying to make amends with each other without squabbling like hatchlings. Thankfully, the two tyrannosaurs were able to make amends when they set aside their differences take down Diablo.
A shame of Chapter 30, the Twins’ relations with their friends are put to the test, as friendships with folks beyond the border brings Temporary Park ever closer to chaos.
Update: Decided to update the picture with a fresher look. Hope you like it.
