I am a member of a medieval recreation group called the Society for Creative Anachronism. Almost a year ago, a friend of mine in the SCA was honored with Knighthood, and I was asked to make the award scroll which would document his new rank. When I joined over twenty years ago, I became interested in the illumination and calligraphy found in Irish manuscripts, in particular the Book of Kells... so much so, that I have done a series of paintings based on those motifs, as can be found in the rest of my gallery. But, while I am happy with how my paintings have developed, there is something very satisfying in creating a large work incorporating many elements; calligraphy, illuminated capitals, large-scale illuminations, and page composition.
