Description
TRANTOR - At the beginning of the thirteenth millenium, this tendency reached its climax. As the center of the Imperial Government for unbroken hundreds of generations and located, as it was, toward the central regions of the Galaxy among the most densely populated and insdustrially advanced worlds of the system, it could scarcely help being the densest and richest clot of humanity the Race had ever seen. Its urbanization, progressing steadily, had finally reached the ultimate. Daily, fleets of ships in the tens of thousands brought the produce of twenty agricultural worlds to the dinner tables of Trantor. Its dependence upon the outer worlds for food and, indeed, for all necessities of life, made Trantor increasingly vulnerable to conquest by siege. Isaac Asimov (Foundation)

Here's the first piece of a series I intend to do based on the "Foundation" trilogy and all the other related books (something around 7 I think). So I'm pretty proud with this one considering its the first time I draw a cut-up close up of a planet.
Hmm, I feel like I have to explain something. The weird things on the planets are not explosion, not huge balloon for kids but domes! Let there be no mistake, hehe.
So let's hear what you have to say about it and let's hope for the best!

2005 was long ago, but have you thought about getting back to any of the Foundation material? This is absolutely beautiful.

amazingly beautiful.
I like that you didn't forget the atmosphere above the domes.

Cool although I thought Trantor's outer skin was one vast structure. I suppose you added the domes atop the planetary megastructure.

The way the surface is described in the first book does not go into that much detail. I too thought that it was just one giant metal sphere.

I would say, you did a great job on making a visual description of the planet from the book.
Oh, and right now I'm listening to a BBC dramatized audio adaptation.
If you would like to give a hear, here is the link:

Try the HI-FI version.

personally i like the fact the domes look so unnatural. If one were to read the story one would learn the severe irony of any attempt to argue they should be left out because they're "unnatural".

That is...incredible. The domes look three-dimensional, the clouds are detailed, you can see traffic lanes on the planet, there are shuttles mid-launch...this is a drawing? It's absolutely spectacular. The starfield, the space station, the number of incoming and outgoing shuttles, and, of course, the planet itself. I notice other people aren't too wild about the domes, but when I copied the picture and viewed it so the planet appeared on the "bottom," it made much more sense (somehow...psychological stuff I guess). And...is that an asteroid impacting the space station's shields?
Like I said, incredible. Excellent work.

first of all, great portrayal of trantor. just finished the series myself, this is an EXCELLENT illustration of what i drew in my mind, a few critiques though, in accordance with what the book describes trantor as...
the domes look a little crunchy to me, for instance there was a scene in prelude to foundation in which hari seldon gets trapped on "upperside" above the domes, he is able to run from dome to dome without trouble, these domes look as though they are made up of squares and other jagged pieces of metal. secondly it seems as though they should be smaller and the crescents should be more stretched out vertically, to portray that "looking down the horizon" feel. another thing is it describes the planet as grey and murky above the surface, perhaps take the saturation of the blue down a level?
despite my critiques i'm loving this image, i can't wait to see what you think of Helicon!

Wow... That's awesome. I've read a lot of Asimov's books (fiction and non-fiction) but I've never been able to get my hands on the Foundation series. This is an amazing picture though... Are the spaceships described in the book as well? Or are they Y-Wings?
