2nd day trying these falling drops photos
The results were kind of interesting too~

The colors come from colored pieces of paper where the external flash was directed.

Edit: I reupped this photo from Safari because DA and Chrome aren't friendly lately and it just wouldn't work... >_< sorry for those who had already favorited

What can I say ?

At first sight, I like the off-center composition. Except... Looking closer, it's not that off-center after all. The drops and impact are actually centered. It's the color transition, by its happening to the left, that seems to push everything to the right.

So my first impression was that the impact was happening in the lower right part of the frame... That, combined with the higher-than-usual camera angle, which makes us dive into the heart of the scene (and the pun here is seriously intended), yields an original composition that I find truly lovely !

Speaking of lovely, the adjective could be applied to many elements :

The depth of field is gorgeous.

The colors are incredibly sweet, especially when reflected in that jelly as which you managed to render water... Then the jelly turns into clouds as it gets away from focus. Very nice !

I don't know how you managed to avoid a sharp line of focus across the whole pic, focusing sharpness only in the center (certainly not with long exposure ! 8D), but that's one more great little touch of nice...

The timing is as near perfect as could be.

The drops' shapes and reflexion are catchy, yet simple enough for the picture to stick to its simple point.

Of course, because of your interesting low angle, the camera's sensor isn't parallel to the drops' course, resulting in all drops not being in perfect focus. But you focused on the centermost drop, which was probably the best possible choice. I can't think of any definitive improvement you could have done with your current gear. Sure, you could have closed down your lens a little bit more, thus increasing DOF, but increasing DOF is not what you want on such a mellow image -- and besides, it would have sacrified some shutter speed (which you can't afford here) or jumped up the ISO (which you can only afford a little).

The only way to get this same picture with all drops in perfect focus would be through a tilt/shift lens. In other words, it would require more gear. I don't know every manufacturer, but Nikon's closest tilt/shift equivalent to your current 105mm F/2.8 Micro (which I guess is what you are using now) is the Nikkor PCE 85mm F/2.8 Micro. It is a bit shorter and focuses a bit further, so you'd probably have to crop your shot to get the same composition.

(Another option worth trying would be to throw all drops slightly out of focus, so as to get a softer but more uniform picture. This is splitting hair however, and probably as much a matter of timing as of focusing distance. I'm no expert here.)

So there's no perfect solution here. I suppose that's why most photographers take their shot parallel to the drop's course. I find your choice more interesting, though. Especially with this dramatic lighting.

In conclusion, this one is my favourite from this series of yours... Though I'm starting to develop a fondness for Plic Ploc now too... for which, btw, you haven't requested a critique... yet e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="388" title=" (Wink)"/>

Thanks a lot for your critique and also for all the precious informations and advises! That will help a lot the day I try again!

But wow, the tilt shift lens is REALLY expensive

Yes they are... never used one myself, hence

So you see, you couldn't have done better safe for $1500 worth of additional equipment !
