You know, looking through the comments of my "Nostalgic Thinking" post, HyperSonicXda has made a decent point with the nostalgia recently as he's mentioned the differences between Call Backs, Pandering, and laziness.Colors = Call Backs
Generations, Mania, and Forces = Pandering
Sonic Lost World and both Episodes of Sonic 4 = Laziness
And the levels truly show this claim. To be honest though, between the pandering and laziness, the former is at least honest. Sure, it rides that fine line between the other two interpretations, but with maybe the exception of Sonic Mania, It doesn't bother me too much.
For Generations Green Hill, I couldn't see any other level to represent Sonic 1. It was the first stage in the series and replacing it with Starlight Zone would lack the effectiveness for a strong opening. As for Forces... well the premise is that Eggman took over 99% of the world and is shaping it into his image, and considering it was intended as a late anniversary title, it would make sense to think what would Green Hill would look like under Eggmans control. Shit, I would've done it. Even Mania added it's own mix to it along with the Death Egg Robot as the Zone's boss.
Chemical Plant, I'm honestly less bothered by it as it is one of my personal favorite stages from the series... outside of the bullshit water section. Generations did a decent job for fully re-imagining the stage and give some reason as to why the water was rising for Act 2. Forces, similar to Green Hill, at least they actually bothered to make assets for a colder version of the area and partially turn it into a Spaceport. Mania's version was also really good to as it added some elements from Wacky Workbench... only it doesn't suck.
But most of all, at least they kept the names. Green Hill was Green Hill and Chemical Plant was Chemical Plant. To me, it says a hell of a lot more than just copy and paste older zones and give them a different name.
Sonic Lost World did this with Windy Hill as it's just the same trope with Super Mario Galaxy Elements, which was reused for Sky Road Acts 1 and 3, along with the Casino Night aesthetics for Frozen Factory.
Sonic 4 had it way worse though, as they're the same zones with different gimmicks, sure, but we're supposed to interpret the zones as a whole as different areas.
We have:
Not Green Hill Zone (Splash Hill)
Not Casino Night Zone (Casino Street)
Not Labyrinth Zone (Lost Labyrinth)
Not Metropolis Zone (Mad Gear)
Not Aquatic Ruin Zone (Sylvania Castle)
and Not Wing Fortress Zone (Sky Fortress)
Yes, they have differences, but the similarities are still prominent.
Generations, Mania, and Forces are lazy? Look at Lost World and 4 Episodes 1 and 2.

The original Green Hill zone didn't have long pipes you can speed off of, nor did it have windmills, the only thing which is comparable is the checkerboard dirt.
If Windy Hill had Mario Galaxy elements, it would be less fast-paced, and more of a puzzle, the only elements it has like Mario Galaxy is the aesthetic.
Lost World brought new concepts and new moves, and a new art style, the only thing unoriginal it did was reuse some stages, not all, but SOME.

Windy Hill could've used much less green hill, and Lost World was criticized as Super Sonic Galaxy for how blatant it looks.

It only has the aesthetic of Super Mario Galaxy and that's it.

Very true.
Besides, there are worse things than nostalgia pandering when it comes to games, imo. I know I said that I hated nostalgia pandering, I changed my mind about it.

Sonic 4 Episode 2 is better about it, and it was also pretty tongue-in-cheek with Sylvania Castle's boss. I still hold that 4.2 is a good game and it deserves more credit than it gets.
But yeah Lost World and 4.1 were straightup lazy, no doubts there.

Can't be any lazier than ignoring what I write.

Nah, your laziness is showing, DarkSonic180. Stop shilling for TrueSonicSpirit and Psyco.
