Description A Common Mormon butterfly (Papilio polytes romulus) hovers momentarily in mid air while its proboscis extends to feed on nectar from a stalk of flowers. A member of the Swallowtail family of butterflies, this species are amongst the largest butterflies in the world, including the spectacular birdwings. It is interesting to note that although they are called Swallowtails, some members of this family do not have 'tails' at all.

Taken with Canon EOS digital SLR and 180mm Macro lens with fill flash fired.

Thank you! Glad you like it. It just takes some luck and practise, I agree butterflies aren't the easiest subjects to photograph, but then again the challenge is part of the fun. And they are such lovely creatures.

Oh...really? Which part of the States do you stay at? I was always under the impression that there are many butterflies over there...unless maybe if you stay in the city or something. They seem to come and go in seasons...sometimes there's an 'explosion' of them, sometimes very little.
