Description
A Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) preens its feathers on its favorite perch. Kingfishers preen their feathers regularly, usually after they have done their fishing, to ensure that their feathers remain waterproof, so that the feathers do not get waterlogged and cause the bird to drown when they dive into the water for their prey.Fullview for best results.

They have a small gland that releases a type of oil that protects their feathers from water . They use the beak to spread the oil evenly and to they spread it in between the small gaps
.
I had to say that, it was one of my favorite topics in animal behavior, and vertebrate anatomy .
