Description Not so much a tutorial just a, this is how I do it.
This was done with Artrage studio pro 3.5.5.

Step 1. Just a rough sketch with the pencil tool, simple.

Step 2. Open layer under the sketch and choose back ground color,I hardly ever paint on a white canvas.
Now I open a layer on top of the sketch and using the round oil brush block in areas of skin tones, the same for the hair in another layer.

Step 3. Using the palette knife tool set to instant blur begin blending.

Step 4. Eyes, nose, mouth.Begin with the eyes get them right and everything else will follow, get them wrong and there's no point going on.
I use a combination of small round oil brush, pencil and air brush, blending with the palette knife if I need to.

Step 5. Back to the layer that contains step 3,using the air brush tool soften any hard edges and make any corrections. Once happy merge all layers down apart from the layer which contains the hair
I now pretty much repeat the process for the hair and then merge that layer down.

Step 6. I now have the painting in a single layer, from here it's all about the details and tidying up.

Well that's how I do it I've not gone into to much technical detail about settings of tools simply because I don't get all that technical about it ,I just paint straight out of the box if you like plus it makes my brain hurt.

Hope this is of some use to somebody, but as boring as it may be sometimes there's nothing better than

Practice,Practice.Practice....................

Thank you so so so much for this! I got ArtRage and was thinking portraits might be a good place to start, but had no idea where to...well, start. Simple, easy to follow!

Now, if only your talent were built in...

Artrage is much more user friendly, has a much simpler layout making it easier for beginners. It's a good program for kid's to start with as it's less technical based.
It does have some elements of photoshop some of the brushes and the layer elements.
It's also very affordable. If your just looking to paint or draw I highly recommend it.

from your words I feel the artrage is quietly like the gimp... not advanced like photoshop and its not free as the Gimp

I won't be doing another one of these.......it was a pain in the arse.

If you don't want to practice you won't win any (gold)medals now will you.

I've been using AR since way back! I only use two programs AR and Twisted Brush Pro Studio. I love AR because one can really go into detailed work and the colors are just brighter, don't know how else to put it. Wish there were more "Ragers" here on DA!
