Oh!!! So there IS a much better ending after all!!! Oh, this makes things so much nicer, and in my opinion it makes the entire comic better! So Twilight's efforts were not meaningless! Twilight's reward for her hard work isn't a tortured reign and an ironic, guilt-ridden death. She has merely shed the mortal coil, and put on a lovelier form, ready to embark on a new and beautiful life with her friends on a new plane of existence! What new adventures they will have! What gorgeous rest! What works they will do now! Now they just need to wait for Spike, and their circle will be complete! Oh, I'm so happy!
Now personally, I would have kept her wings because first of all, I'm an oddball who prefers alicorn Twilight because I like how she's still the adorable, well-meaning, hard-working, flawed, ever-learning, and evolving pony we know and love on top of a cool design (I love wings; silly reason, I know, but that's me 
wait...
I just had a thought. She wouldn't be a princess in the afterlife right? So there'd be no need for her wings there. Okay, I think I understand. I could be 100% wrong in all this, but speculating things is fun
Nevertheless, I still love, love, love this ending and I respect your decision! I cannot stress enough how much I approve of this ending.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the right name is Elysium. There were ancient Greek asylums, "safe harbors" though, so the confusion is understandable
But it totally makes sense what you're saying. Like a yin/yang kind of thing; there are opposites to things. We know there's a Tartarus in MLP, and Applejack alluded to Heaven in "Filli Vanilli" (I know it was a figure of speech, but words have origins, so there's that to chew on
