Description FYI, I had to redo 1/3 of this thing because my computer locked up. Save your work, guys. Don't be a dumbass like me.

But yeah, I frequently talk to my friends and other folks to help cheer them on a bit, to show them that there's more to art than doodling on your homework. Some of these folks seem perpetually trapped in some kind of rut that they think they can't escape. Meanwhile I'm over here silently screaming at them to just do something different, anything at all.
Some of these guys.. stubborn as mules. But I love 'em regardless.

There's another side to this though: people that are content with what they're doing. Little risks, little reward, little growth. It's a real bummer when you see folks with potential that just seem to do one or two things over and over again.
In my experience though these people are exciting. If you take their hand, figuratively I mean, and guide them slowly to trying new things, they'll run off and start doing all kinds of unexpected stuff.
I've only done this a couple of times. And as it turns out I've had a couple of people do this for me. I hadn't even realized it until much later.

Nothing beats the feeling you get when you try new things. A rush of curiosity, the excitement over the new possibilities. It gives you the drive you need to work toward reaching your potential.
Whether you succeed or fail, you learn a bit more every time.

It's thrilling.

Over the last couple of years I've done a bit of experimentation; rather than doodling more circles with faces or angry dudes or other small and silly things, I tried to challenge myself in a variety of ways. I studied from a few photos, scribbled around, tried new brushes...
I've disconnected the internet for a week a few times. Sometimes it's not the art. It's about you and your habits.
In time I ended up with several exercises that I enjoy doing, this guide demonstrating a few, as a warmup or just as the entire day's practice. If you look through my scraps you'll see these often.

and thats how i became the president of space

Anyway, I really do hope you folks look these over and try a few things out today.
Like, right now.

Supergood. I hope it helps you out a bit.
If you want anything from a third party (ie. me) like shapes, junk art to upgrade, or whatever else, just gimme a ring.

That is a very kind offer! I will keep it in mind <3

(and I think the exercises helped, even though today has been a 50/50 Art Day thusfar).

This is epic! I love all these ideas, and when I sit down to draw next, I'll be sure to try out some of these (even if I don't end up liking the result). I've gotten a little too deep in my "comfort zone" and I need a change.

Sure, give 'em a shot. I still remember when you did [link] and it was pretty sweet.
And yeah, the comfort zone is a real creeper sometimes. It's nice to just chill out and doodle but when you have one of those moments where you really feel like doing something new, you should do your best to act on it before it fades away.

Since the comfort zone is a habit out of complacency it can encroach and exist in all aspects of your life. Best to work to defeat it somewhere where you can easily spot it, like when you draw. Sticks out like a sore thumb.
Accept all challenges, never rest on your laurels, make no excuses.

Great advice! I've already drawn some, but I don't like them quite well enough to share them publicly on the internet. So I'll just keep going until I'm more comfortable with the "discomfort zone," I guess.

Thank you for making this! I've been hitting a lot of walls myself lately, and this seems to be the way out for me.

Well, I hope you get where you need to be, dude.
Good luck with your animatic too. I often romanticize animation, though I rarely do it.

That'd be pretty sweet. It's nice to see other people do exercises or challenges like these because of the crazy variety that comes out in the end.
I see it a lot at the #Design-A-Character group. Lots of fun.
